This is because you people refuse to buy cell phones.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Electronics maker Motorola said Wednesday it will be cutting 4,000 jobs this year in an attempt to cut costs. The new job cuts follow the announcement of 3,000 job eliminations in late 2008.
About 3,000 of the newly announced cuts will come from Motorola's Mobile Devices division, which has been under pressure from plummeting mobile phone sales. The rest will come from corporate and business divisions, according to Motorola.

I did my part to keep them afloat. My cell phones, and my XYLs, are Motorola.
My kids, on the other hand, have Nokia, L-G and Blackberry units.
Lots of stuff out there, Mot has to try to keep up!
Funny part is, it's all junk, it all fails, so the primary thing is to sign up with a "plan" that is the best deal at the time!:p

Maybe it's time for Motorola to get out of the consumer electronics business. Their cell phones have always been junk. My line on Motorola has always been best radios, worst phones.

Not so sure you'd like the price tag though. They seem to be a bit proud of their stuff. Besides one of their execs has already publicly stated that AR is pretty useless.

Motorola defined hand held cell phones. Every new feature, every cutting edge model. I have had many a Motorola phone with never a problem. My current razor model is over three years old.
Motorola is the company all the competitors watch and copy, period!

With giant companies hatcheting massive amounts of workers like this, that makes it even tougher to get a job. It is hard enough trying to convince the employer that YOU are more qualified than the 1000 other people applying, and that you will work your heart out for him, but now, that number of competitors has just gone through the roof!!! Every day I read how more and more companies are laying of 5000 here and 10,000 there. WHERE are all these people going to get jobs? Can't survive on Unemployment, which runs out after a year or so anyway. Not enough Liquor stores around to hold up. Crime will skyrocket until Martial Law is declared!!!!!!!!! I am surprized they haven't already declared it in Detroit, the most Dangerous city in the WORLD!!
So scary times are coming. People will KILL you for a loaf of bread! Better invest in GUNS to protect your house. The Vermin will be STORMING it!!!

::Motorola did make a "ham radio," a long time ago. The Motorola Metron (?) or something like that. Glen K9STH probably remembers, I can't recall the model name for sure but it was a 25-30W 2m FM rig with a sloped front panel and actually was a very good rig. Not as "glitzy" as the Japanese stuff, just very solid performance.
I think they found out how cheap hams are and decided to exit the ham market after than one.:p

It was the Motorola Metrum II. I have that radio and the manuals to it. Very very rare. It is crystal controlled so kind of useless today, unless it has a 146.52 rock in it.

I agree. I've lots of different cell phones over the years, and the only ones that didn't give me problems were the Motorolas.
My wife took a Christmas season job a couple of years ago at a Verizon phone store.
The least returned phone for problems was Motorola. The most returned for problems was anything by LG.
I currently have a Moto Q, having checked out all of the available, including the Blackberry. The Moto Q was the only one that didn't feel like a piece of junk. No problems with it yet, and not anticipating any.

n0ov calling someone you don't even know a complete idiot tends to become a bit more of an attack. Might want to be more careful in the future to avoid going too far without realizing it.
Nope -- the only one than confirm that fact is you.
Going to far without realizing it? Care to elaborate on that one OM?
Frankly, you should be less concerned with this, and more considerate to those who you are having fun with at their expense -- specifically the thousands of people whose jobs are at risk. I sure would not make fun of you or your situation if you learned your job was at risk.
I guess I agree with you Greg, a little thought is appropriate to avoid going to far without realizing it.

::MIke, I think you're dead-on with this one. I've had nothing but Motorola cell phones (although I also have a Blackberry, purely for its ability to display my incoming e-mail on its screen and allow me to answer e-mails from the field -- that's all software stuff and not hardware) and none have ever failed. I was a cellular "early adopter" and have had hand held cell phones since 1988, when they were larger and heavier -- but even then, the Motorola ones were reliable. My kids have had "everything," and the L-G phones have lasted less than one year on average before needing replacement. They die for every reason under the sun. ("I was thinking bad thoughts, and my phone died.")
The iPhone is cool but I absolutely HATE its user interface and find it counterintuitive, plus the user cannot replace the battery pack without voiding the warranty. What the hell kind of design is THAT?

This is either the best lead in line a troll post ever had or proof you are a complete idiot.
Personally I think option 1 is applicable, don't you :p

Actually Greg it seems that after quoting two options he showed his belief that option 1 was applicable in this case which is in bold type above. I would say this is him saying the direct opposite of what you are accusing him of which you seem to be doing a lot of lately. Try reading a bit slower and maybe going over it an extra time or two.
Nice of you to use my words to quote against others though. You prove once again that I am your unwilling hero.

Since Greg doesn't seem to care to elaborate maybe I can help.
This is something I told him in another thread after he told me to "take your stinking foot out of your mouth." I figured the foot part was ok but to assume it to be stinking was bringing his statement closer to an attack, not an attack yet but closer to.
You see, Greg likes to take lines I write in response to him and use them against other people. I seem to be his unwilling hero.

At this point, this thread is nothing more than annoying. Stick to the topic, all of you, without making personal attacks. It really isn't that difficult to do.

I must say that I'm surprised with Motorola's decision as they are #1 maker and sellers of police/fire/rescue radio systems.
I guess GE will now get a bigger slice of the pie.

Question is with the economy the way it is and the extra budget that has been used by public service agencies paying for fuel over the last few years how much is left to buy new radios?
I would imagine this decision is due to the pie, as a whole, getting smaller.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I thought that the Fed had given monies to states so that they and local govs could improve their communications systems?

When have you known any state to be able to follow through on anything without going over budget? When have you ever known the federal government to give enough to do what they earmark the money for? Then you figure this money was given in the first year or two following 9/11 which means it has long since been spent. No help for a company needing current sales.
Then do keep in mind that while Motorola may be the best choice out there in a lot of ways it is still only one of a number of choices. A lot of municipalities may have opted to go with cheaper suppliers. Governments at all levels are famous for awarding the lowest bidder.
Wyoming used a lot of that money to build a statewide interoperable system. A lot of this system is in place but has not been released for use. I don't know if this is due to it being incomplete in some areas or lack of funds or what. I think a lot of it is everybody was hot to trot in the early years following 9/11 but have lost interest to a great extent.
So the terrorists are after Wyoming now? Who knew?
Btw... I will only buy Moto cell phones. Even the nextels. I've had my current phone in the rain, toilet, mud, sweat, dropped, tossed, beaten. It's still ticking. (mostly) You can beat the crap out of a moto. Same reason I like Yaesu.
Next on the list is Samsung. Fairly tough, just not as tough as Moto. Samsung usually sacrifices bells & whistles for quality. Ugly phones, horrible screens, but clear, clean audio in a tough package.
If moto is gogo, I'm off to samsung or the G1.

Same here Steve! I started with a couple of Motorola flip phones and had a bag phone for the car. Remember bag phones? LOL! Of course it was also Motorola.
I chose the Moto Q for the same reason that you chose the Blackberry: Internet access primarily for emails. Looked at everything available, and it came down to a Blackberry (with full QWERTY), or the Moto Q. I know the Blackberry is the popular choice, and I was going to go with it, but after handling both in the store for a little while I had to go with the Motorola. It felt more solid, and the keys are a bigger. My index finger is only as wide as 3 of the keys on the Q, instead of 5 on the Blackberry. :)

You do have a way of completely misunderstanding what is said don't you. Nobody ever said anything about terrorists being after Wyoming, only how some of the fed money was spent here. Of course if it ever came to something big, as in full scale military strike by another country it would not be surprising for us to be in the cross hairs. I'll leave it to you to figure out why, and no they don't want our sheep.

Another thing to keep in Mind Motorola Employs several Fellow hams. I will only own a Moto Cell phone too. Rest are cheap toys with fancy features. Motorola is Quality and reliable.
My Moto Razr v3i works great. Now all I need is a hearing aid (which I really need) so I can hear the other party on the other end of the line.
Unfortunately, we haven't seen the last of massive layoffs, not by a longshot. The sad part is, depending which state you're in you may not be eligible for any state benefits to tide you over if you're layed off (instead of being fired.)
I guess I'm partly to blame. I don't have a cell phone. Hey I guess Moto is the next recipient for a bailout. BTW, lets not forget, a ham invented the walkie talkie which evolved into a cell phone and a cell phone is simply a radio tranceiver that happens to have the ability to make a phone call.
