Is it spelled different over there?
Mass vs Mas ... ?
Yeah, in the US its spelled "Masons". Better check to be sure before you go to a meeting.
I've been waiting my entire life for an invite.
C'est la vie.

Yes, You are invited. Look for your near by lodge. Tell them I sent you. If you are a good person, I'm sure they will welcome you.

Last I heard someone from the lodge had to invite you.
I was fairly certain that one could not just walk in.

I once saw a bumper sticker with the square and the compass that said, "To be one, You have to ask one."

I saw one. It had the little masonic symbol compass and the other thingy and it said 2B1 ASK1.

That is correct you will not be invited unless you are familey
If you want to be one just ask one
Or stop By the Hall on a meeting night they will tell you all about it in the hall way.
and you may get the POINT

You do have to ask.
Seriously, if you follow it through, it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. It takes effort, but is well worth it.

You got to play the chairs while you are there

Ok, before I walk to the nearest lodge and inquire; I am not Christian, and have heard this is a pre-req? True or false?
I am religious, just not Christian FWIW. Thanks. :)

Lessee, a retelling of the Osirus myth in the new myth of Hiram Abiff, secret handshakes, convoluted rituals, "allegorical" double talk, so on and so forth.
None of this has anything to do with being a Christian, and in the thinking of many is even morally prohibited. Secret societies, indeed...

I guess I'm good to go then :) Not Judeo-Christian, and my religion is all about secret societies. Ask a pagan to see their Book of Light, or their Book of Shadows ;).

I see your a Homer fan from your avatar, Try and get a copy of the episode where Homer is invited to join the stonecutters.
It's a good parody of the Masons.
"Here Homer, don't dial 911 (999 in GB) , Here's the real number!" - as he hands Homer a slip of paper.

OH NO--BLACKBALLED AGAIN:p
UGV, you might even recognize a lot of the symbolism and history--it is borrowed heavily from Chaldean, Sumerian, Egyptian, early nomadic Palestinian, Greek, and other pagan forms.
Hopefully, no problem exists with using the bible as a symbol, after all it is the Volume of the Sacred Law. If you keep giving the Lodge your hard earned money, eventually you will be murdered by three guys named Jubela, Jubelo, and Jubelum. Then the Worshipful Master will bring you back to life with the Lion's Paw, and you will get to hear the secret of the universe, whispered in your ear:
Ma'at-neb-men-aa, Ma'at-ba-aa. After that, all is well.
Hope that you like bad theater and singing...

From what I have read, it does appear to borrow heavily it's symbolism from many religions:
Ie: Single creatrix who encompasses both genders, Rituals of Degrees, Book of Secrets, etc.
Many of the rituals from the "secret societies" aren't quite so secret, but are quite beautiful. Wiccan initiation is quite similar to Masonic initiation, but it's contentious as to whom borrowed from whom (Gerald Gardner was a Mason IIRC).
As for the Bible as a symbol, the Bible in and of itself teaches some great things ie Love on another, be kind to the less fortunate. And it would be solely a symbol ;)
As for the whole, death and rebirth thing; it's nothing more ludicrous than eating a dead persons flesh and drinking their blood (ie Communion).

Expanding from my previous post.
I knew you had to be invited, I was HEAVILY warned AGAINST asking for an invite.
So I thought it best to leave well-enough alone.
