The Harper family from Lake City, Georgia. Received a FREE home worth $450,000 With all labor and materials donated. these homes are supposed to go to families in decrepit living situations. But yet, here's a case where the family put up a donated home as collateral for a $450,000 Business loan and their business failed . The home has now been auctioned off.
It has simply got to make you mad after 1800 people dedicated their time and money to build you a home valued at $450,000 and then you lose it to foreclosure due to plain stupidity.
I did love the scene at the ending of the movie "Wild Hogs" where extreme home makeover Rebuilt Del Fuegos Bar."
Instead of building all of these people mansions buy them all a standard double wide trailer. the houses on Extreme home makeover all All flash and way over done for the need.

Do you run a small business? Have you ever tried to get funding to START a small business? If you have not, then you haven't a clue as to what you have to do to get a bank to loan you money. You can bet that banker saw that nice, hefty chunk of real estate and insisted it be used for collateral.
So they lost their business. Businesses are failing every day in this country through no fault of the business owner. Customers have fled. Short term financing is non existent. An SBA small business loan? Don't make me laugh. The banks find the paperwork is too much bother and they find it easier just to say no.
My wife and I own a small business. It's struggling right now, and our accounts payable are starting to run into 30 days past due. I hate that, but if our customers don't book appointments, the bills still come due. The holiday season, normally the busiest time of the year and when we make the most money, was flat. Dead. No money. Thankfully our creditors are working with us, as we're not the only one in these dire straits. No one is bailing out small business people. We're taking it in the shorts.
Small business generates most of the jobs in this country, and the vast number of small business people don't fly around in corporate jets and have multi million dollar salaries. The people you have such disgust for took a chance on opening a business and lost. Stupidity may have played a part, but I doubt it. There are more foreclosures in my neck of the woods than you can count. Not all of those homeowners were "stupid". Falling home values, skyrocketing taxes and homeowners insurance, and the economy in the tank is hurting a lot of people. I know. I've lost my own home because the homeowners insurance in Florida became too much for me to afford. So now the bank has my old house. Guess I'm "stupid" too, huh. By the way, I now live in a double wide trailer. Not a standard one, a very nice one, bigger than my old house with three times the land. I don't own. I rent now. Most of my neighbors live in similar double wide trailers. We must be trashy because we're too stupid to afford a home, right?
As for the people that lost their house, you act like they took out a mortgage and spent the proceeds on booze and hookers.
They have my sympathy. You have my loathing and disgust. You may find yourself looking for new lodgings, for if the mortgage doesn't go up, taxes and insurance costs surely will. Then how would you feel when some holier than thou type calls you "stupid" because your financial fortunes turned?

Ages ago there was an article about a woman who received a habitat for humanity home for free, and she immediately sold it to get the cash.
What to do? If that bothers you then chose your charities with such consideration.

If, you're that much in need of a house. Then you shouldn't bet it on a business. Unless, you're 100% sure you won't lose it. The bank should have looked at all the options before making a loan. especially when you had $250,000 Bucks donated to your Children's future, it's still a Stupid move.
They're actually much worse off than they were before. They at least had a home live in. consider this, Lets say that you had a home worth anywhere from 25 to 60 K before you got a free home. Now,you have a home worth 400K dollars. How are you going to pay the increased taxes, Upkeep, Higher utilities, much higher insurance premiums.? You probably won't be able to.? Which is exactly why I said give the folks a much more manageable solution like a double wide trailer. No sin, no shame in Manufactured home living I did it for years before finding an older home at the right price.

A double wide trailer? Have you lost your mind? You act as if it's your money that's being spent on these houses. What's it to you that the show builds these people a nice big house? Could it be jealousy because you don't have a big fancy house? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

No it's not jealousy. "Extreme home makeover is treating the symptoms and not the problem." But,why? put someone into something that is beyond their means.? Most of the people that have gotten the Home upgrades. have struggled to keep them several have already had to give them up simply because they cannot afford to keep them. the IRS demands payment on all that . Everything associated with that house and improvements is subject to Federal and State income taxes. And I'm not saying ten years down the road that's right now.!!!!! All that furniture and appliances the Jacuzzi and swimming pool. "Even if it was a gift is subject to the taxes at"Retail" value.
The primary objective of the program is to adequately fit people to suitable housing. You don't have to build a 9,000 square foot house for a family of 5 that is simply overkill.
What about when your property taxes are assessed.? You might have been paying something like $1.000 to 1.500 dollars tax on the previous home and now your tax bill is going to be in the $ 5,000+++ dollar range. Consider this what about when it comes time to heat and cool that behemoth.?
And you get an Utility bills every month in the 1000+ range"If you're Lucky." What are you going to do.? Pray that you hit the power ball.?
And consider, that you and you alone, unless, you can hire a reliable handyman are primarily responsible for all the maintenance and up keep on that house. Speaking of maintenance ignoring a septic tank problem until their first house was unlivable was what started this whole thing anyway. I had similar problem here a few years back and when my septic tank was giving trouble I called a professional and had the field lines replaced and and the problem was solved. It doesn't exactly take a rocket scientist to know to get things fixed before you have a major problem.
And what about your property insurance.? depending on where you live. You could(Will) get a whopping insurance premium to pay. There's about a 500% increase in insurance on a $60,000 house and a $400.000 K house.
No, I,certainly don't want to have to deal with all that. I'm not envious not one little bit. I have a modest home that was built in 1941. Not a 5,300 square foot home constructed in 7 days. That can't be very well done. In fact the trailer I owned for ten years was a very comfortable home. that TV home sounds more like a split level packing crate to me.
Also, bear in mind that this couple also got a check for $100.000 dollars for maintenance and $250,000 was set aside for the Children's education fund. Both should have been in a trust fund. Within 2 years all of the money and the home were gone. Consider this, after the foreclosure this family had to move somewhere.? Probably into a smaller home.? Maybe even a mobile home.?But, it appears you seem to have a problem with Manufactured homes.? Then why not put them in a comparable existing home.?HMMMMMMMMMMM.
"BTW: No, I haven't lost my mind I'm just smart enough to live within my means."

They built one of those monstrosities here in North Pole, as well. It's a nice house, but it's the BIGGEST ONE IN TOWN, by a factor of about 2. I can't IMAGINE what it costs to heat the thing....it's 55 below here now.
We'll see how long this one lasts, I suppose.

Extreme Makeover, and shows like that are in it for the MONEY.........
So what's the difference?
So, one or two of the hundreds of makeovers they 'tape' for profit has what some feel is a couple of what appears on the outside as 'ungrateful recipients' etc........so what?
Maybe they should rewrite their conditions and have those receiving this bounty including situations such as this, at least with a time limit of say 3 years. Maybe they couldn't even dig up the quarterly taxes for this home OR, and Ia m not sure but I think the I.R.S. wants their share too, being a GIFT, it's taxable like 28%?. On a $450,000 home that is $126,000, payable UP FRONT :)...who knows
So many other reasons that they made that decision, who knows, the media only prints or tells parts of a story and a majority of it, unless a validated video, is Hearsay and I just question the validity of the reports.
Most average citizens cannot afford these "gifts":D
