Is there an alternative to the expensive factory Yaesu programming cable for the Yaesu 7800? Either a standard off the the shelf cable or otherwise?

Look at the various internet Ham stores. I purchased a copy of the programming software for my FT8800 and it came with a cable, for about $35.00 two years ago. I think I got my particular stuff from AES during a sale.

I got the cable from Associated for $9.95. But that was a raw PS2 type din connector cable. I needed it for an Echolink application. And no you cannot make the cable you need . It is PS2 to serial and it's not just simple pin to pin. There are actually active parts in the Serial connector. Thats' why it's allot more money.

But, I'm lucky a friend of mine has the cable and software for programming and I just borrow it when I need it . . .

EBAY has what you want. But with a good knowledge in electronic construction, you can build it yourself.

Luke -

A majority of the programming cables are actual TTL-to-RS232 LEVEL CONVERTERS.
TTL - Transistor to Transistor Logic. A Google search will bring you hundreds of references on Level Converters used in robotics and by micro controller programmers!
http://www.superdroidrobots.com/rs232.htm

Now, the ARRL Handbook has included diagrams and parts to build these for two decades.
MANY of the newer cables actually use surface mount components and have a small PC board inside the RS-232 DB-9 connector shell.

A cable kit to convert between RS232 and TTL levels.
Includes a MAX3221 on a special circuit board that fits into a DB-9 connector.
Required for programming the BotBoard Plus. $15.00

YES, there are also USB-to-TTL Level Converters.

MOST of these "kits" ASSUME the standard 5 VOLT TTL signal ---
NEWER TTL designs are now using 3.3 VDC instead !
