Yes, it's the ugliest radio in 8-land. I took pictures and put it online. I'm kinda tired of posting pictures here so I'm starting my own ham radio YAWB! (yet another worthless blog)

What would you do with that thing? It's a realistic TRC-101B. I'd like to find a schematic so that the various mod options might be more obvious.

Mount it on a plaque on turn it into a club award. Maybe for the "Bonehead of the Year"
Award it as the yearly prize for the most idiotic QRZ "Pro-CB" thread...
Wonder if she'd knit one for a TH-F6?
Heh!

I'm surprised at your modesty... WHY have you limited your description to only "8" Land?
Surely it deserves wider notoriety .:D

I'd probably put the horrible thing on 10m AM,but then I'd have to find someone else silly enough to talk to!

Well, I'll have to take your word on it, true enough, I haven't yet found anything uglier here in 6-land, but, I can't really speak for the ENTIRE country.
It's possible that their might be something somewhere that is uglier.

I remember those and believe we used them in CAP with 26.62 xtals in it. At least I think that was the freq.

This was my thought too (sayeth the guy with the 40 year old Motorola FM HT also on 10m.) But you'd still be on the hook for the hazardous waste disposal fee (for that beyond hideous case,) while my HT can double as a life-saving deadly weapon until old Sol perks up a bit!
Good luck.

That's bad. But some woman put time and effort in knitting that that uh thing. :( Take it to several hamfeast and charge a $1 to see it. Then when you die will it to the ARRL. It would make a great magazine cover for QST.

Sorry about blowing up. What happened was that I just got done with clicking on CB sruff for sale 2 or 3 times in a row not knowing it was CB stuff and it didn't look like CB according to the description link. And also a thread or 2 that I didn't know was CB until I clicked on it.
I come here for HAM RADIO. Not CB. If I wanted CB threads, or CB stuff for sale, (of course I don't) I would go to a CB site. So I kinda stripped a screw when I clicked on here not knowing this was ANOTHER CB THREAD!,,,AGAIN. So that's why I kinda lost it.

Well, after that last response, if it were mine I'd think I package it up and ship it straight to W0UZR by Fedex. And I'd pay the fedex guy to have a little hidden camera to send me a video clip of UZR going into a spasm when he opened it. The video clip would be the start of a fantastic new thread on QRZ :D :D

Well, I missed your blow up. But, I didn't intend for this to be a "CB post." I assure you, that radio will NEVER see the "11 meter band" again. I usually buy CBs, for parts. The question was meant to be technical in nature. 10 Meter AM, 6 Meter CW, 15 meter CW, beacon, trophy, gag radio (siren when you press ptt), portable guitar amplifer?
Surely there are more ideas than that?

its not THAT bad!!! You should see some of the radios I have bought for ALOT more than that. 20 or 30 times that!!!! SO you got off dirt cheap!
MY worst radio was a Hallicrafters S-108. I bid and bid on it, and after the auction was over, think it went for about $40 with shipping. Pretty cheap for a S-108.
HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!
Unpon receiving it, it was immediatly evident it would never work again. No Tubes or Power transformer. The entire chassis was rusted solid, but what was worse was all the Electroytic and IF cans; and capacitor plates had dissolved from corrosion. Even the front panel was almost rusted solid!!!! The case was just as bad. Anyone else in the WORLD would have thrown it out, but not wanting to take this kind of a loss, I began to restore it to "not bad looking" condition. I sanded down and repainted the panel, and re-lettered it. I did the same with the Cabinet, but you can still see the ripples where the rust bubbled through the steel. The dial glass was touched up and the knobs were repaired and detailed. So it looked pretty good, even though nothing inside was ever to work again. Now it sits on the shelf as an "example" of a S-108. If I ever come across another S-108, I will have some good spare knobs, and thats about it. THEN it will be time to toss this in the dumpster, or better yet!!! PUT IT BACK ON EBAY!!!
Maybe YOU can restore it!!!

i have one of those "ugly" radios just like that, except mine dont have the red on it, and the the switches and signal meter are in different place. mine is a trc-101 . i wouldnt take 1000 bucks for mine, cause a really good friend give it to me. he got it somewhere, thought of me, and brought it to me, free of charge.

Well,I'd certainly take less than that for mine but I wasn't really thinking about selling it. :)

Always wondered what ever happen to that radio. I used to own it back when CB was popular. My mother made that case to protect the radio.
There, now you know..

Haha, I'm here to tell you that there was NO demand for that baby when I was in 8-land. I saw it at no less than five hamfests.

10 Meter beacon, on a mountain (on a tree) and don't forget a solar panel or give it to our future vice president (Sarah Palin) she can strap it on a mouse and use it for tracking.

At this point I really want to hear more from Greg. If this was his at one point then I'd like to know more about its story before I make a decision on what to do with it.

Well, yes, I don't blame you, I might try something like that too. Not that I want to insult anyone's mother but there are probably quite a few who, with the best of intentions, have been guilty of making something ugly for their kid. I figured you were probably having a bit of fun but it wouldn't have been hard to believe your story. :)

As per the law of supply and demand what you have is technically priceless, since it is a 'one of a kind'.
Real value, of course, depends much more upon the history of the item. For instance, if Betsy Ross was the person that knitted the cover it would be worth a pretty penny!

Well, one thing we know for sure is that Greg's mother did NOT knit the cover. I doubt that we'll actually ever know who made it. I don't think that it belonged to a ham previously.

What to do with that radio?
Get a 2.5 gallon clay pot set the pot on top of about 6" of dry sand, place radio in pot, add 1/2 KG of Thermite, light road flare and use flare to light Thermite.
Sit back and enjoy.
