Announced today that it will go online Sept. 10.
Well the tear-in-space/no-tear-in-space debate will soon be decided.
Will we have a even expanding world ending hole?
I can just see the reporters, that always are standing on the edge of the ocean when a hurricane comes in with their yellow raincoats, standing on the hill looking down at the collider circle, or maybe in a helicopter.
By the way, what color coat do you wear to this?

"Will we have a even expanding world ending hole?"

Yup, I saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel and they even have a new hazmat placard for it.

"Will we have a even expanding world ending hole?"

Scientists have calculated the odds of this happening as too minute to worry about. This hasn't stopped bookmakers from taking bets from people willing to wager that the end of the world is near.

The only thing physicists agree on is that they don’t know what will happen (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/11/science/11collider.html?bl&ex=1221192000&en=ff30584fc9366d5f&ei=5087%0A)

It's a sure bet. After all, who'll be around afterward to collect?

I wonder if ear plugs are required for this test

We're still here 24 hours later.

Of course the real space-time rift runs under Cardiff, not Switzerland......

Now where are the spare Tardis keys?

They've only tested the beam in one direction. They'll next run the beam in the opposite direction. The third test is when we'll know!

Yep. There is already at least one of them posting very regularly on this forum.

Don't worry, the web site http://www.hasthelhcdestroyedtheearth.com/ will let us know if we have anything to worry about.

For those of you so inclined, I recommend viewing the source code for the page - the comments are a hoot.

Had Congress not pulled the funding the largest unit of this type would be just south of the Dallas / Fort Worth area. In fact, it would have been over 3 times the size of the one in Switzerland.

Its hard to believe OUR congress pulled funding for any pork barrel project! Hmmm, I wonder if there is any relationship between a congressional pork barrel project and a black hole?

The chances of the LHC destroying the earth are considerably less than the chances that you will suddenly poof out of existence while shaving, but maybe we should be worried after all:

Actually, a good portion of the funds would have come from private sources. However, without federal funds there were not enough funds to continue. Several miles of the tunneling had been completed before the project was halted. They did try to garner enough from the private sector but were not able to get enough in the time frame that the government allowed.

Hardhats and neckties on the same person always make me a bit squeamish.

For some reason the only time I see them is right before or right after a real big construction failure.

and failed miserably.

SCSC was probably the worst big-science proposal ever. It was good to kill it. Pity it got as much money as it did.

I've applied for a grant to fully develop my new generation cold fusion device: I spray liquid nitrogen on my fuse box and that makes it really cold. The goals of the project are to see if that makes the fuses open at current other than the room temperature rating, to have fun, and to spend the government's money.

I think it will be approved. I've already asked Sarah Palin to be our spokesperson and believe she's up for it. We're calling it "Project Barracuda."

As usual, I blame it all on the Ninth Circuit.

The US is participating in a "garden shed" project which is much less spectacular and, I suspect, better value for money.

Did I miss the announcement that politics is allowed again?

Before I start participating in this political debate, I just want to double check and make sure it is now ok again.

I'm ready.

FWIW, the comment that the SCSC was a bad idea isn't meant to be political, but technical. In order to have achieved their design goal, they would have to had made fundamental breakthrough progress in four different technologies -- one of which (superconducting magnets) still hasn't seen the necessayr progress to allow the SCSC to operate.

The project was just too expensive to risk having to make that many breakthroughs for it to have worked at all, let alone done good science.

Waiting a couple of decades was a good move, technically.
