I've been an electronics tech since '64. In that time countless people have given me countless things. Electronic things.
Anyone who has a junk radio, old TV, or just a pile of parts would rather see it in the hands of someone who will do something with it. At least, in my experience.
Also, in my experience techs - AKA packrats - give freely of their junkboxes to other techs.
Am I alone in this, or do we all get mountains of freebies?

I've got so much free stuff I'm going to
have to buy a bulldozer to move the stuff
in my shack!!!!!!!!
The thing i get most is old computers and mainly
computer power supplies.
I can count over 20 power supplies that i have
setting in a pile close to my current position.
I have built so much out of
computer power supplies, it's not funny.
Most switching transistors will run into the
20MHz range and is a good choice for rf
output amplifiers.
One project I'm thinking of is using the parts scavenged
from one power supply to make a
100w cw transmitter.
That would be fun.

So, are going to see this as a project in QST when it is done? This will be your chance to make sure a few pages in the magazine are to your liking! :-)

Seems like everyone is giving me an old tv or vcr. Although, as of late there seems to be a rash on the old console style stereos. Well, at least they have a tuning cap and a loopstick which are always welcome additions to the junk pile. I say pile, cause the box has long since disappeared under the pile of parts that surround it. What really amazes me, is, even though I have a good selection of junk to choose from, I still cant stop myself from going on "alley picking" missions. 73, Doug

If you collect up too much 'junk' some liberal might try to give it away.

For the most part, people give me a head ache.

Over the last 35 years I have collected tons of "JUNK". People would give me old appliances, TVs, radios, computers, you name it. It is surprising what you may be given. A lot of the stuff I have repaired and given to others.
Half the stuff I own (Radios or otherwise) was given to me. I have numerouse items throughout my shack that were given to me, meters, a receiver, speakers, mikes, even a tower! Sometimes these things need simple repair and sometimes they are fine. One thing I've learned is it never hurts to ask about something http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

If anyone feels like giving any HF related items away I would give it nice home http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif.
I am 14 years old and I have been a tech since July. I am working on upgrading to a general class.
Merry Chistmas!!

yes friends are always willing to pass on bit and pieces, but most of the electronic companys I have worked for would sooner smash the gear up rather than let a employee make use of it, sad aint it??

Most of the stuff I have been given came from other hams that were on one or more of the email reflectors (mainly QRP) that I subscribe to. I will make a post about wanting to build up a project and usually I will get a couple of emails from other hams letting me know that they have "extra" of a particular component and if I need it, let them know. Of course I do the same thing as well. Just this week I was talking to a fellow ham online and he mentioned that he was wanting to find an old ARRL handbook so he could build a 40m CW QRP "hollow state" rig. I happened to have an extra 1966 HB in my collection, so I shipped it off to him. Helping your fellow ham is a big part of our tradition, IMHO
