Hi, I'm Kevin ZL1KFM.
I have had a Ranger 2950 for a while now. I have decided to pull it out and use it at home for 10mtrs. It is not a DX model as it just says RCI-2950.
I remember before putting it away that it would beep when I pressed the PTT button. I have powered it up again today and it still beeps when I press the PTT, but it also beeps when I release the PTT.
I have done some searching and can find mods for the radio but no information on this issue.
I believe I have an older radio as it has 2x sets of pins behind the display, looking from the front on the right hand side (top corner, radio up-side down).
I have tried with both jumpers off, one on each and then with both on but it still beeps. This is not the roger-beep as I have turned it off.
Also it says about pushing the reset button, but there is no reset button there, and I have used a mag-glass to search for it. I also do not see the back-up battery that was mentioned, so unsure what this means?

It does seem to TX ok, but the beep is annoying when PTTing.
Can anyone help please with a suggestion or two.

Regards

Kevin, ZL1KFM.

Locate the PCB which has the jumpers on it (it is behind the front panel)

Find jumper J2, you will notice that it is on pins P3 and P4

If you remove it you will have coverage from 26.000-29.700 Mhz

If you place it on pins P1 and P2 you will have coverage from 26.000-32.000 Mhz

Now reset the cpu by pressing the button below J2

To get a channel read out locate J1, the jumper will be on pins P1 and P2, move it to P2 and P3.

Now when you press the lock button you will toggle between CB channels and the VFO readout

VA3BNR,
Thank you for your reply. The informatin you supplied is the information I already have checked out. I have changed the jumper settings. BUT there is no reset button in my radio that I can find. I have pulled the radio apart including the front display and CPU, there is no indication of J2 or a physical button to press. So I am at a loss as to where this button is.
The information between v1 and v2 state 2 different jumper setting that is why I guessed I had v1 as it has 2x sets of 2 pin jumpers.
Yes one gives the expansion and the other allows switching between VFO and channel mode.
BUT it is this dam beeping I can not get rid of when I press and release the PTT button on the mic. To be honest I can't even remember if it did it the first time I used it after purchase. Maybe it is the CPU telling me it is not locking, but it does it on every frequency I enter, it couldn't be that badly aligned. It does RX and I have had it TXing, so I am bewildered.

I will keep at it.

every 2950/2970 I've had has beeped on ptt on/off regardless of the jumper settings.
they beep for prettymuch every button push even vfo from the mic up/down.

since you have it tore down allready, dig around and find the piezo buzzer in it and disable it to eliminate the beeps.

I have owned a few 2950's and never did any of them beep when I pushed the ptt to talk. Pressing the other switches did make a short beep but never on Ptt. Not sure were KC7YPJ got his rigs from mine were bran new.

Kevin

I have a 2950 that did the same thing. On the backside of the LCD, facing the inside of the radio, there is a small piezo buzzer. It looks like a little speaker, that is what you want to remove, or cut the wires to it. I took mine out all together, and I have had no beeps since! I hope this helps.
