From CNN
China is banning half of all cars from the streets of its capital as it tries to clear the air before the Olympics next month. Drivers with odd numbers on their plates were forced to take public transportation today to be followed by drivers with even numbers tomorrow.
:mad:Country's like China probably do not have any pollution control devices on there cars nor any other of third world country's
Now if they'll only ban all of their coal-fired power plants...
They should keep the ban permanent.

A friend of mine helped Cancellera, a pro cyclist who will compete, find accomodations in Bejing.
He is going early so his body can adjust to the polluted air. I believe a lot of the athletes do the same.

How do you ban half of a car? Wouldn't you fall out?

China has simply too many people. They are gobbling up too many resources, including oil.
The USA also shouldn't be granting asylum to Chinese who claim persecution because of the Chinese law banning more than one child per familiy.
The pollution in Asia is staggering, much worse than anything we have here in the USA. Google "brown cloud over Asia" to see what I mean.

Wasn't it Beijing where the traffic cops used to stand in the center of the intersections had to wear oxygen masks or some form of respirator mask? Also the pedestrians wore masks and other types of breathing apparatus. I remember seeing a picture of one intersection and the cop engulfed in a smoky haze while breathing from a "Life-pack".
Why isn't the rest of the world jumping all over the Chinese government over this disgrace? Most target the USA because they hate us so much. If it weren't for the United States of America the entire planet would be ruled by Nazi's and Taliban forms of torturous and inhumane rule. Kinda like China is right now apparently and governments turn their heads when it comes to trade dollars. Yes they "trade" human rights for trade dollars.
Still cannot get over the fact that the Olympic Committee picked this polluted garbage dump for the Olympics.
So who are really the guilty one's? Just China?...........

I hear you but they are all being given a pass because they are considered developing nations and it's suppose(d) to be good for global trade.

Its because they don't operate on many of the principles being harped to us right now, ie, conserve, carpool, drive a vehicle that gets better MPG, etc. They just fuel and go, probably only do what little maintaining is needed to keep the thing running.
Course, the problem with that is no matter what we do, the price isn't going to fall. The only way we can save is to consume less because they will be driving the market anyway. Thats why its being harped more than anything else here-we best use less of it, not because of the fact we're running out tomorrow, but because of the fact that for every drop less we use, someone else is going to burn it anyway.
The only way the brown smudge over there is going to stop is if we stop buying from them. Course, when you see that, and see how polluted their water is and stuff, you can kind of see why we'd rather have them do it. If we bring it back here then we have to do it correctly or we're in that boat also.
But they are going to run with that until they cannot anymore. Thats what makes it so frustrating here when we want to do things like open new refineries etc with anti-pollution stuff in place-we're told just even a smidge will be detremential. Meanwhile across the ocean they are just polluting the heck out of the planet, and eventually thats all going to wind up everywhere anyway. You would think doing things cleaner here and thus shifting the need to import down would help more in the long run. They won't be polluting as much if they make a lot less of things.....
If we do run out of oil though, we may fall flat on our faces. A country like that though will be falling off the cliff. You want to talk about a place not exploring anything alternative....and solar won't work very well when the sun can't get through the crud.

They are trying everything to get their air cleaned up.

Maybe they need a more effective form of population control.
I think putting a limit on children here in the USA may be a good idea as well.
I wouldnt set it at one, maybe two or three, but there are to many people in this country that have five or six that you and I have to pay for.

Perhaps the answer to this is to get the UN to ban the use of cars in China so that the US can continue to cause air pollution. The cars the Chinese are buying are exactly the same ones which are purchased in the rest of the world, BMW's, Mercedes, Audi, Toyota, Honda, etc and the big problem is not the cars, its the power stations, steel plants and cement makers.
The banning of cars on certain days is not new, it was done in Paris and other European cities years ago until car engines got less polluting. The city of Beijing should not have been chosen for the Olympic Games because the city has always suffered with bad air, the same with Athens, Mexico City and San Francisco. Last week there were photo's in the paper of the dilapidated state of the Greek Olympic village, fenced off and guarded by bad tempered arrogant security guards. Do they choose men for this job who have tempers like junk yard dogs ?

I got a better idea. How about we cut off our ports from importing thier cheap made junk. They can go back to an agrigarian lifestyle, actually they would be better off that way.
The US should keep all its resources and say to hell with the rest of the world, fight your own wars, and if you give us any lip, we got a couple thousand missiles that have a "loud report".

I don't worry so much about the cheap junk as I do about the very high-quality stuff they can make, such as my cameras and microscope.
