That man you see in the photograph above is an international treasure. Under that rejected humble facade is none other than Charles Thomas Bolton who will one day be seen as one of the great astronomers of all time. (http://www.fanboy.com/2008/07/canada_defiles_an_astronomical_treasure.html)

Shameful and sad. This is the Father of Black Holes.

He's fine. This is just an overemotional screed by some sorehead on the internet. Research money is limited and facilities get shut down all the time; scientists move on. Such is life in academia.

Never the less, it is a famous observatory, and the way the axe was applied reflects absolutely no credit on the university. Perhaps the screed is overemotional, but the facts are the facts.

...the facts are the facts.
And the fact is the observatory is no longer useful. Sentimentality has no place in science.

Looks kind of like a slimmed down version of Michael Moore. If we ever lose him I hope they don't find him.

Well,
Kinda funny the way this works out eh?
A well known astronomer gets kicked to the curb just as RAC announces that we will have new special event callsigns celebrating astonomy..... makes you think.

VE6WTF, to be CG6WTF come febuary.

A damn shame--I hope a university in the U.S. will find a place for him.

Ed Stelmach?
I can name a few more than that....
God knows we could have alot of fun up here with a short bit of rope and a sturdy pony, find a good oak tree and some beer and it would be a great way to pass some time

Who knows... maybe what the world needs is a little cowboy justice?

Well depending on where you went on vacation you should get yourself checked....

well... I guess if its not a big fat ugly native american you should be in the clear, or a gal from whitecourt, or Fort Mcmurry... then you would be in trouble

Well, OM, there is more than one type of usefulness. Certainly most research needs modern equipment, good weather and clear skies, no doubt of that, but a university does a little more than just research. It teaches, too. Even a wealthy university can't afford to send a class of undergraduates down to Patagonia or across to Hawaii for some hands-on experience, they need a decently equipped telescope within easy reach, and if that telescope can be used for a little light research on the side, so much the better.

There you are, OM, not a trace of sentiment!
