View Full Version : Rant - MySpace and/or cellphones

Why is that some people can't seem to live without these (either or both)? I can't stand someone continuously carrying their cellphone everywhere, as if they would be naked without it, and texting across the room or from the front to the back of the car.
And then there are those that upload a boatload of pictures on a daily basis to MySpace and are always on it.
Why? I'm just curious. Maybe it's my personality (INTP), so I'm introverted somewhat. The first time I've talked on a repeater in 8 years or so was once in the last year to test my 706 on 2M. I only turn my cellphone on when I leave for work and I turn it off as soon as I leave work - I hate carrying that stupid thing. Am I the only one (sure, they can be useful as a tool, but not too often - how did we ever make it without them)?

If it were not for my XYL I would not carry a phone either. Don't need it, don't want it and anyone I need to call can leave me a message at home or call me later. I have tried unsuccessfully to get rid of it, but she swears up and down I need just in case she needs to reach me during an emergency. That is when I told, "XYL that is what amateur radio is for." Needless to say that did not go over very well.
MySpace and the other trendy teen hangouts I will never understand. I am 38 years old and I am trying to think what I could equate these places to when I was a kid or even during high school and I can't. Mobile phones were too new during the late 80s and I recall one rich kid who had one. Internet was nowhere near as popular as it was today. So maybe this is just an aspect of society that was created by the times and people wanting to share their every piece of daily lives with strangers. I dunno, guess I'm an old fart, I don't get it.

Touche' - however I've had less than 325 posts on here since I registered back around 2002 or so. But you've only had 90 or so, so you win:)

The people I'm referring to aren't teens, they're supposedly adults. Maybe I'm just an OF as well (34).
I have to carry my phone for work, all the time.
If you don't like it, please pay my bills, thx.

I don't spend much time on the cell phone or on myspace. My wife keeps track of friends and uploads pictures to "our" myspace page though. I am 35, but often have to remind myself that I am not 18. hihi

Uh im 32, the XYL is 35, and we both have myspace pages and Nextels. What exactly are the requirements for being classified as an adult anyway...at least in your eyes? Paying taxes....having a mortgage?

Okay, so scratch my teen comment. I don't know why 30 somethings, like my XYL use MySpace. Too cheap, don't have the know how to buy a domain name and space to build their own web site. That is where I do any ranting, okay "blogging" (I hate that word), images, etc that I want to make public. I don't understand this social networking through sites like these. I met my now wife on IRC playing computer games, so this whole concept is not new to me. But why it continues to see older (adults) individuals partaking....pfft I haven't a clue.

Wait you gonna come out swinging against myspace and cellphones and you met your current XYL on an IRC network? :D
I could easily buy a domain name...set it up etc....but myspace is free....and there are a lot of Hams on there plus relatives etc....so I dont mind posting photos or "blogging"....My parents are in their 60's but they dont have myspace pages....they do, however, have nextels. Oh and my mom plays Xbox games.....:D SHES NOT AN ADULT OH NOESSSSSS:D:D

Today's internet is much more than just webpages.
The internet is where people collaborate and communicate, whether for serious reasons or simply to have fun.
I'm not a big MySpace person because most of my friends aren't on MySpace.
Rather, I use facebook. A lot of my old high school and college buddies are on facebook, and it's a good way to be able to keep in touch. It's more like a shareable online phonebook, photo album and public diary all rolled into one.

I use myspace to communication with my friends scattered across the nation, nothing more nothing less. As for blogging it is a way for people to alleviate stress at times. I have a cell phone and I think the bill is equivalent to my car payment :p (not quite, but close), then again I dont have a home phone, so it is my primary means of communication. I also maintain six websites so I dont use myspace because Im to cheap or stupid to obtain my own domain. Heck I even talk to people on xbox live and through IM's. Oh and I cant forget forums and amateur radio! So I guess it all depends on personal preferences.
Texting someone across the room is the equivalent to using a HT at a hamfest to keep in touch with the rest of your group less that 1000 feet away!

I've got a friend and he is litterally OBSESSED with myspace...I'm like...why do you like it...His response was simple:
"Because i can be who i want on there"
Which after him saying that, and seeing what i do on tv, it is like people just make up a whole other side of them for people to read about. I just reply to them, they should go play an RPG (role playing game) on the computer or a ps2. Same thing really :P
-----------------
Funniest things i see with cellphones are those people at restarunts babbling away on their phones as they go up to the bar to get food, then they go back and sit down and continue to talk on it with their mouths full! It just flat out amazes me.
I'm probably one of the only people around my age that isn't into myspace, or cellphones. Yes i have a cell, but its for emergancies only (sick grandmother, or stranded somewhere due to my car). I average about 7 minutes a month.

I HAVE to carry my phone with me so my parents can call me if I'm out somewhere, and so I can talk to my girlfriend :D. I do text, but not across the room unless I have to be quiet or something. I don't think I have put my phone down since the day I got it though .

Now show the inverted side of what you just said.
Some people hide who the really are in person and show their real self on the internet. Why, maybe because it is easier to be yourself around people that you dont know. Granted you still have the psychos that make up an alter personality to draw attention. I dont need a computer to show that Im psychotic. :p

I use it to keep in touch with friends I have made in person, or those I knew from high school way back when. I don't use it to hook up or get hooked up, only to find spammers overwhelming me with crap.
There was a good friend who's account got hacked and after several months of this, her frustration set in and she deleted her account. Those clowns that do this are going to do it to the wrong person and then it will get ugly.

Quite obvious with the last sentance.... :D
And yes, some people do start to be themselves more on a computer, because they dont have to fight with their self esteem, but from what i've found most make up a new person for online. Or stretch the truth to make their lifes sound intresting.

OK, should have clarified a little further - I'm ranting about those who are always on their cell phones (talking or texting), answering calls from anyone while in the middle of a face to face conversation with others that they have driven 100's of miles to see, and continuously on it regardless of the situation, then they get freaked out whenever coverage drops and watch their phone until a signal returns. Is that a little better? They treat the thing like it's their heart or some other vital organ.

As with N2RJ, I should have clarified a bit further - it's very similar to my response to him. These people have to check their MySpace stuff at least twice a day (when on a "vacation", but are usually logged in all day long if they're at home) and get antsy if they don't or can't - regardless of what else is going on around them. I'm talking about those that just can't seem to function without it and get upset when the connection is down - not the casual user.

I never thought it was creepy back in the ol BBS days (Warning:OF Content ahead) when I was a teen and the people running the boards were 15+ years older then I. FYI Tom, one of the founders of myspace, is 37! He was only 32 (my age) when this all started....so you are using a network created by adults. :D
As far as having a cellphone so your parents know where you are at all times....I didnt get my first cellphone until I was in the Marines back in 95....before that we used those little silver things called payphones. :D
When I am home my nextel is off....people know to call me here first then try my cell.

Agreed.
As an aside I play on Xbox live....Ive been playing on XBL for a few years and most of the people I play with are my age....Sure the games are populated with teens etc....but they dont think its creepy that a 32 year old plays COD4 or Frontlines. Ive always played video games.....hell my parents have a photo of me playing River Raid on Atari in my GI Joe underoos....I had to be 4 or 5
Yeah I know thats a scary thought! :D:D

I have a friend that is the same way. Any face to face conversation with him that is more than 10 minutes long *will* get interrupted as he answers his cell phone.
I am just the opposite. If you call my cell phone 90 percent of the time you will get voice mail. I have failed to develop the Pavlovian response of immediately ceasing what I am doing to talk on the phone, any phone.
Someday someone will get some notoriety by being the author of an accepted set of etiquette rules that address interruptions from cell phones. If that works, they should try it on kids next.

VMC, I'm not knocking anyone who does it, I just don't see the obsession by some. I do understand it's free and a very simple way to post content for family, friends and relatives to see.
Maybe I was calling the kettle black when I mentioned I met my now XYL via IRC, playing a game. That too, the game (Urban Terror) was nothing more than a social network as well. So I am just as guilty as the next person who posts on MySpace or Facebook.
I guess after 10 years of development and being a member of a community such as it was I have grown tired of it and just wanted to move on and leave all that behind.
My wife still games daily playing Guilt Wars (Yes I spelled it incorrectly for a reason) and Urban Terror with her online "friends" while I am more content to play Xbox by myself, but have jumped on Live! now and then.

Personality has something to do with it. INTP and INTJ's make up about 5% of the population together. You are probably thinking "why do they need it ALL the time?" Add in the other introverted groups and you probably have a grand total of 15-20% of the population. The difference between INT* and INF*/INS* is the former group isn't really motivated by social norms, wherein the latter groups are the introverts that are trying to fit in, more or less, so the number of friends on MySpace creates an illusion that they are fitting in.
And of course, MySpace is really a popularity contest for many people.

I don't know what this world is coming to. Teens these days playing with nonsense like "myspace". When I was that age we didn't have any of this junk. Instead we hung out in parking lots in back of warehouses and in bad neighborhoods drinking beer...among other things. That was our social network. It turned us into MEN!!

What amazes me are the ones that are either urinating or better yet sitting on the pot talking on their cell phone. I have seen people do it at work and in resturant bathrooms. It's kind of sad to think that these people are so busy, or at least they think they are, they don't have time to use the toliet without talking on the phone. No one should be that busy.

I was... once. My daughter's potential piano teacher called while I was on the pot, my daughter cracked the door and slid the phone in (Shes really looking forward to learning to play the piano!) and I answered it. Carried on a conversation and was about to exit the loo when I had to force myself to not follow protocol with the traditional flush... the party on the other end would surly know my location of operations!

I have a myspace, why is that creepy?
Well, I should say had, I seldom use it, with all the flash ads they have now it's really enoying.
But it used to be very useful when I was in a desert combat clan to keep track of game and practice times.
I could see it being "creepy" if someone tried to "add you" to their friend list, it's creepy to me, I still get emails from it saying so & so wants to ad you.
But some of these things are good for people with common interests.. Heck, what are you doing on THIS internet forum with all these Olde Pharts?

I do believe at one time you had to lie about your age to get a myspace account if you were under 18. So I dont see why it is creepy either. I am 21 and have only had a myspace for about a year and I have friends on my list that are 2x my age. Some of them are ex-coworkers from my last summer job and others are friends form the local coffee shop. Then the rest are family members.

Ok, I was not sure. Dont you have to have a privet profile until you 18 though?
Also wasnt myspace created to target college aged students? I heard someone say that the specified age group was from 18 to 35y/o. Either way I dont care, its a virtual social community open to the public so if an 80y/o wants to get on more power to them. Remember that most sickos are sick even when they are kids, so its not necessarily the adults you have to watch out for.

Thats true... And yes, you have the choice to make your profile public or private, even if you are under 18. Mine is set to private, and most of my friends are all set to private too.
