Had an opening last nite (9 July UTC Time) which allowed some of us in the black hole for 6 M DX to actually hear and work Japan. In all my years as an op, I have never, ever had the opportunity to hear let alone work a JA on 6 Meters, especially from this location.
Keep your ears peeled for DX openings. They happen, not often but they do happen.

I have worked JA7's & JA8's from Kansas with F2 skip on 6 meters and KH6 with Es. Japan is a long way on Es!

chris,
that's fantastic,
I'd love to hear that QSO, any chance anyone got it on tape?

I kind of thought that would happen. A listened to a few locals work some stations around 10:00 last night. The propagation started in North Dakota when I started listening, and progressed in a counter-clockwise direction, finally appearing to vanish after midnight. I assumed the path went out over the ocean and wondered if Alaska and Japan would appear later.

And still it's much easier to work JA from 0 land than it is from 2 land.

Congrats on the 6 meter contact :D
It's MAGIC!

Or Eastern 3-land. :(

we dont get THAT many opnenings ( like, none at all ) here in 4 - land...but things may get better in the future

True...but I am in 5-Land....way South of the 0 District which, true, is much easier to work into KH6 and EU, etc. Prop is much different or non-existent when you hear E. Coast (usual) and upper Mid West working DX you never get to hear.

I would have to argue that. I hear and see tons of spots from 1-4 land on EU, N. Africa, etc., that we never hear but the wierd thing about 6 meters is one Grid square over from you may hear and give a 599 report and you don't even have ESP copy.
Those ionized clouds are sometimes very spotty.

Excuses excuses Ryan, with that MonstIR you make your own propagation. :p

Translation: After JA on Es on 6 meters my next step should have been to run out and buy a lottery ticket.;):D

It can't make any propagation from ground level.

Chris: EP doesn't have time to do much T/R on six meters.. With over 13K posts on this site, he's way to busy to be bothered by any outside interests. :D :D

You'll have to fix that won't you! :)

73,
::It's a very special Es path, and actually involves at least triple-hop. Triple hop over the ocean isn't so rare because the sea is a better, lower loss reflector than land is. I've made many JA contacts on six meters via 3x Es from here in CA, but of course we are closer.
More exciting for me is working the CTs and such on 6m from here on the west coast via 3x or 4x Es. It can be done, it's been done, it's just very rare. Some locals have caught it in the past few weeks, I've missed it each time!

::I did it via F2 in 1979, all through '80, then again in '90 and much better in 2001 at the peak of C.23.
Specifically, November 17-18, 2001, the m.u.f. was 60 MHz for 48 hours and 6m sounded like 20m all weekend, day and night. If you missed that weekend, you missed something that may never repeat, at least not on a weekend when everybody's around to take advantage of it.
During that 48 hour period, I completed over 300 QSOs on 50 MHz with JAs from here at home. But more interestingly was also completing with Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, VK and ZL, etc. It just never stopped. Soon as the band went dry to the Pacific, then Eastern Europe would start coming in, before daybreak here.
Amazing conditions.

I also worked my first JA on 6m on 7/8/2008, and then two more on 7/10/2008 here in Michigan. JE1BMJ was my first JA QSO, and has been working stateside all summer. Many W4/5/6/7, but also many W8/9/0 and some W1/2/3 and VE3.
Han, JE1BMJ has published an article what he believes is a new (or newer) type of propagation mode called SSSP (Short Path Summer Solstice Propagation).
Check out http://www.uksmg.org/content/g5kw/ and click on the "Short Path Summer Solstice Propagation by JE1BMJ" (It's in PDF format). I believe the article was orginally published in 2006. Interesting reading.
