Anyone heard of World Wide Young Contesters?

For some reason they claim I am a member of their club, Website, joke.... whatever it is, but truth is I never signed up for it EVER!

And after reading some of the material on the website I think I am going to ask to have my callsign removed.
You guys might want to check it out as well... make sure your not on the LID hall of fame,

I am "member" #705? or around there

Difficult not to :-)

Signing up for WWYC doesn't require any fancy identity check. The website moderators will approve any membership application that looks OK.

And after reading some of the material on the website I think I am going to ask to have my callsign removed.

Ask, and it'll be done.

And for the record: I'm a lid and proud of it.

GO WWYC.

Nothing; WWYCers just happen to use 'lid' to salute each other in contests. This frequently leads to confusion among those who don't know about it. And that's why we do it.

WWYC has never been overly serious. It's all just about having fun.

Take it or leave it.

We in the WWYC prefer to use "lid" as sort of a term of endearment - we don't take things too seriously. WWYCers truly are the future of amateur radio and contesting.

I'm sorry you feel the need to remove yourself from the list, but Fabian can make it happen if you so desire.

ham radio is a hobby, and unless you own a ham radio superstore or are in the ham radio devision of the fcc/ofcom/comreg, then its nothing to take seriously, hobbys are for fun! I have noticed (esecially in the older ranks) that some people are very snobby about the hobby, and dont like newcomers. To quote an e-mail i got from such a person "in my eyes you are just a little boy"

I enjoy ham radio, and i havnt touched a radio for a few weeks (getting a new hf tommorro) but i enjoy the social side of the hobby as much as anything else, its a great, fun and enthusiastic atmosphere, and its a pitty certain people have to take everything so seriously and ruin it for the rest. Im not making any implactions in regards to this particular post, oly in ham radio in general!

See I didnt really understand how my callsign got on a members list.
I have NEVER heard of WWYC, so that would mean that someone created a false account under my name, or they added me to the members list without consulting me.

These days I have to watch out where my name appears, and why.

So my first thought wasnt too good when I saw "Lid" and VE6WTF on the same website.. I hope you guys understand

I understand where you're coming from. I have no idea how you were added. WWYC is a loose association of young contesters, primarily out of Europe, but with a global reach. It is a legitimate group - several members competed in the World Radiosport Team Championship in Brazil in 2006.

Several of us are active on IRC, Efnet, #WWYC. Feel free to drop by some time.

They are a good bunch of contesters - many in their 20s, but several below and above that range - including some of the best contesters in the world - as noted by N2NL's reference to the fact that SEVERAL participated in the 2006 WRTC (akin to the contesting olympics).

There is also a strong DXing contingency (including DX chasers, IOTA hunters, etc.), but the primary focus is, as the name so clearly states, is contesting....

Actually you'll find that WWYC is as much a social outlet as an active club. They have an annual get-together somewhere in Europe every year and many barley pops are killed at the events. Other meetings take place at FN, the HST events, and of course, on IRC.

While I am a contester well under the age of 30 I do not wish to ever join because of that title.

I don;t think "will do anything to get it" is accurate. I'd say no more renegade than getting your ear pierced or, gasp, your belly button.

Take some advice from somebody who straddles both sides of the spectrum (i.e., was licensed at 13, but is still young enough to find the OT nets horribly boring)..... "Lighten up."

The comment about QRP is not far off the mark. Many DXers and contesters feel that QRP is bordering on masochistic. You call stations and you're lucky if you make it through 10% of the time. You are also forcing the other station (the one you're calling) to potentially spend a lot of operating time trying to dig out your signal.

It does indeed take a different breed to operate QRP - especially in the days of today where thousands of stations are jammed onto one or, at best, two bands.

no seriously, im a very humerous guy, and cant understand why people dont find 'lid' funny. Lets face it, im sure fabian, or anyone else for that matter will agree, Lid is a term that our hobby can really do without, its used bt hobby 'moaners' all over the world to degrade others.

The WWYC are making a very strong statment, that they dont accept 'moaning'. ANd theyre doing this my turning the word Lid, form an offencive, and sometimes abusive word, to a humerous joke.... So lighten up people, if everyone was light hearted there would be alot less wars, murders and unhappy people!!!

Guys, let chill out about this on the forums. We all have or own opinions and the youth forum is not a great place to be having this conversation if it is going to continue to go the direction that it is. K0DXC de KC0XXX ur 5NN CO CYA LID!

That is okay except for the fact that you never know who could be listening. I don't wish the ham community to think I am a lid.

The contest is also questionable, I don't think its right to give out bonus points if the operator acts like an actual lid and tries to get TVI interference reports from neighbors.

Sometimes, with band conditions as bad as they are, TVI is the only indicator that my radio is putting out any power. It's a field strength meter of sorts.

FYI, the "Lidfest" was a complete joke. A few guys got together on IRC and decided to create a contest with the most rediculous rules possible. Look at the Poisson De' Avril contest, "held" on April 1st, won every year by it's creator K1DG, a very well respected and accomplished contester. It's a joke - some guys got on the air and actually operated this "Lidfest". More activity = good plus a bonus for activity by young hams.

Once again, lid is a term used completely in jest. You should log onto to the #WWYC chat channel on IRC and say hi. There is now a link to connect at the top left of the WWYC.net web site. You'll find a lot of accomplished lids there. You'll find NN3W - a CQWW DX contest winner. You'll find DJ1YFK, one of the top CW operators in the world (look up the call on You Tube). You'll find SM2WMV, who is designing and building station automation equipment with SMD devices and OpenASC. You'll find me - N2NL - who finished 2nd in the world at the World Radiosport Team Championship in Brazil in 2006 with my WWYC partner, N6MJ.

I got my license when I was 16 years old, and for many years was the youngest member of the Frankford Radio Club. I have been a member of the WWYC almost from it's inception. I am now 37 years old. One thing I've learned in that time is this: Don't take personal things too seriously. Everyone is a lid sometimes.

Well in your description of QRP op's they would be sadistic, not masochistic.
Forcing others to work hard for some reason causes them pain.
Inflicting pain on another would make it sadistic, however you as a QRP op also struggle to make contacts so I guess it would also be masochistic.
So basically what your saying is that QRP=S&M.

WWYC IRC chat has moved again.....

Here are the details

Hello lids,

we have once more moved the network on which our IRC channel is
hosted. After a few years on Worldirc, and a few months on Efnet, the
final location of #wwyc is now:

irc://irc.wwyc.net/

The information on the WWYC website has been updated to reflect this
change, also the Webchat (accessible from the WWYC.net frontpage) now
points to the new channel.

In your IRC client, you only need to change the Network/Server, from
Efnet (irc.efnet.org, etc) to irc.wwyc.net and reconnect.

This will hopefully be the final location of our channel!

Thanks to Simon, M0CLW and Michael, BD5RV, who made this possible.

73,

I can't believe I didn't notice that there was a thread here about WWYC. It is a great organiation. I did a presentation at Ham-Com about WWYC and sadly there wasn't many young hams that were present during the presentation. I am hoping that at Ham-Com 2009 that I can persuade Colin to host a booth with me.

I found out about the group a few years ago when I first got involed in radio contesting. I am just now getting active again in radio now that I am done with school and have more time and money. I really enjoy contesting and feel that contesting incorporates so many different aspects of our hobby that it will be the reason ham radio stays alive and it will be the very thing that gets young blood interested in radio.

I am hoping to get more interested here in the United States and Canada. You really should look past the jokes on their website and look at the bottom line. A great organization with great potentials.
