Nice, I like!

I need one to read "almost know code ham", HA HA! Still struggling with becoming more proficient, mostly a matter of free time. Sigh.

Cool, I had a QSO with Cal early last month, cruising along at 30wpm. Wish FISTS club had those shirts in more color options. The term "old man" isn't to be taken literally. It means friend, pal, buddy, fellow ham...etc.

cw aint all that bad, you find folks who are WILLING and EAGER to slow down for us that can not copy fast...it IS tough dealing though with the drunks who cant send their OWN CALL SIGN correctly 2 times in a row.....ok they may not be drunks, but they still can not do it thesame way 2 times in a row ( send their own call sign ) .

I aint given up on the whole mess, yet...but there are a LOT of folks out there who can not send their OWN CALL SIGN the same way 2 times in a row..

other than that, it is a fun way to communicate.

Cal's quickly made a good name for himself - and I've heard him on the air, he brings the goods :)

Cal, you just need more Fritos, dip and soda to be one of the "big boys".

Thanks for the cool pic LWC. Bet Cal makes you feel old ;)

I can't absolutely send my call the same way twice, especially on the straight key. I can only make that guarantee if I use the computer.

But that would be like cutting and pasting every time I posted on QRZ - and what fun is that? Oh, wait...

Until very recently, every ham in the world was a "know code" ham.

We've dumbed down not just as a hobby, but as a society, and maybe a civilization.

<Sigh.>

But the world will survive. I think.

What's the matter Calvin? You bored today? Not getting enough attention? There has to be some reason you keep beating a dead horse into the ground.

Geeze, there just HAS to be one in every crowd that LOVES to beat down other people's accomplishments! I'm not going to mention any names, but one person's call ends with GSP , I believe ! ! ! :( :(

My sincere apology to Calvin. I saw the picture and didn't look at the posting call sign. I became so used to seeing Calvin start these threads I jumped to a wrong conclusion. And my reply was in no way meant to beat down Calvin's accomplishments. I am envious of his speed as I can barely make 5wpm so far. These continued threads are the point of my post. Let the dead horse go. Stop driving a wedge between Ham operators over something no one here can change.

Again sorry Calvin.

I love to see the younger generations leaning and working code. I only wish I had had someone to make me learn it when I was young. We played with it in Boy Scouts and stuff but I had no application for it. Now I learned it and am still fighting my brain to build any speed.

Its the most fun I have ever had on the air but it is also one of the most frustrating things I have done. If I do not use it regularly I have to back up and start all over relearning it, same for ops procedures as well.

Old brains don't work in the same way young ones do thats for sure and for certain.

Who's driving a wedge? The title of the thread is, "I'm a proud KNOW code ham." The thread recognizes an operator for his ability and accomplishment not only to learn something but excel at it. If that's driving a wedge between hams, I'll go out and buy myself a bigger hammer.

I am a KNOW CODE Ham too! I passed my 13 WPM at the FCC Office in San Diego after 8 tries, and have the wallpaper to prove it. SO I do indeed KNOW the code. How GOOD I am at it is another story!

I am not going to say what code tests I passed (they're irrelevant) but I do use CW on air.

Congrats, Cal...

Seeing your picture and reading the comments about your CW experience at age 13, reminds me of mine, also at age 13, in 1958...The on-the-air CW experience was very exciting and challenging in those early days and it still is immense fun now, 50 years later!

All the best to you, young man, as you continue to learn about and enjoy the greatness that amateur radio IS.

Really, who's driving the wedge?

::That's the key, pardon the pun. All licensed hams in the U.S. have code privileges, whether they passed a code test or not. Some with "no code" licenses have tried the code and found they liked it once nobody was around to tell them they had to know it, so they're getting into CW now.

That's cool.

some thing in the human mind just works like that...take away a requirement and the "obstacle " becomes easier to do ( like with the morse code requirement )...

This might work on other things, too....such as

legalization of marijuana --- if it is legal to grow / sell / use, the FUN of it may disappear within the first 6 months.

legalization of alcohol --- if you can buy it any where in the USA, usage of it MAY drop within the first 6 months, after the basic THRILL of it being easy to obtain is gone.

Human brains work like that.

Same with vehicle speed limits --- make it ok to go as fast as you want to or can, within the first 6 months later folks will accidently / on purpose SLOW DOWN.

But in all 3 instances there is the scenerio of death --- you CAN die from smoking too much pot, from drinking too much alcohol, or driving too fast.....or you can die from staying at home, and banging your fingers on a keyboard .

FAIRLY SIMPLE AND ALMOST TO THE POINT

I don't know how so many people can get off saying that fone is so superior to CW,when I hear so much vocal crap on some local VHF and UHF FM repeaters.
Call signs are sometimes totally garbled like "Wate mumble gurgle standing by"" this is "Nate blptszx" or, " QRZ the machine from "caceyate glurpff"... If Phonetics are used it's like a cutesy giggle of the day and not even APCO, NATO , let alone ARRL recognised phonetics.
ON HF it is even worse, some regional dialects are not well interpreted by other region's ears and the gentlemen operating DX stations who are polite enough to use our language sometimes are not easy to understand.

NOW, on CW, even the newbie's choppy fist can be sorted out into nicely spelled out information, understood by all who learned Mr. Morse's wonderful code !.

And I passed my written and my 5WPM 29 years ago on the first try. Afew months later, I passed another written and a 13 WPM on first try. And fifteen years ago, I passed another written and a 20WPM on first try. And the one I took after that, I passed on the second try.

So keep the cookie. I want chateaubriand--medium rare, please!

I WOULD use cw more often, but I grow tired of being in radio contact with those folks ( none of which apparently ever read my posts on qrz ) can not send thier OWN CALL SIGNS two times in a row the same way.

Notice that I am stating --- apparently no one that reads my posts here on qrz are guilty...it is other cw operators whom I would bet YOU may have encountreed in your radio life.

So none of you need to get upset and send me hate e-mails, or say things out loud to make my ears burn .

peace be with all who read this message

I am proud of my personal interest in homebrewing and CW though I am not a master at either skill.

Sadly, if one cannot mention these and other related interests here on the premiere Ham radio site, where else would they go?

It is easy to determine those who really have the true amateur spirit.
If your involvement in the hobby is not in great measure to share in the joy of a fellow hams accomplishments or seek fellowship with other like minded radio operators or experimenters, why bother?

Young OM Cal should be proud. I assume there are about 4 million amateurs in the world (WAG). Perhaps, 40% are active on HF.

Maybe 20% of active HF hams use CW or are decently proficient at code.

Of those very skilled CW operators perhaps 20% can operate @ 30WPM.

Someone said Cal is a 30WPM operator. That places him in a very small, elite group. We should all be proud of him.

Maybe in the future we can place more US call signs on the top list.
