Rush Limbaugh talks big payday
Radio host will get $400 million in contract extension
By Mike Stern, Radio and Records
July 2, 2008, 06:25 PM ET
Rush Limbaugh and Clear Channel's Premiere Radio Networks have agreed to a contract extension that will pay the conservative talk-radio pundit more than $400 million through 2016.
The eight-year extension includes a $100 million signing bonus, Limbaugh told the New York Times. The deal comes about a month before the broadcaster celebrates 20 years in syndication Aug. 8.
One of the highest-rated programs on radio, the daily three-hour "The Rush Limbaugh Show" reaches about 20 million listeners weekly and plays on about 600 stations nationwide.
"This is exactly where I want to be, doing what I was born to do, with an amazing audience and phenomenal support from affiliate stations and sponsors," Limbaugh said. "There's a relationship between the audience and the host here that is second to none. We're going to continue to provide broadcast excellence and have a lot of fun along the way."
Said Premiere Radio Networks president Charlie Rahilly: " 'The Rush Limbaugh Show' enjoys an unprecedented platform of radio affiliates. Plus, advertisers harness the intensity of listener engagement. No one's word of mouth about a product or service delivers more impact than Mr. Limbaugh's."
The 90-second weekday commentary "The Rush Limbaugh Morning Update," the monthly "Limbaugh Letter" and RushLimbaugh.com, which includes the subscription service Rush247.com, will continue under Premiere's purview as part of the agreement.
Limbaugh's existing contract, which was worth $285 million over a nine-year period, was set to expire next year, the Times said. The new deal is believed to be the most expensive in radio since 2004, when Sirius Satellite Radio paid Howard Stern $500 million for five years.
The deal would appear to come at a good time for Clear Channel, which has been negotiating for months to close a buyout deal that would take the company private.
Wednesday's announcement comes amid speculation that Premiere will also be involved in a new deal with conservative host Sean Hannity, who is now syndicated by ABC Radio Networks.

Bill & Hillary must be besides themselves! Limbaugh brings in 4 times their income for the same time period! Shocking!
And to add insult to injury, nobody is stepping forward to cover the Clinton's personal money lost on Hillary's campaign. How revolting!

Then again, O'Reilly has just led 'his' ratings game for 90 straight months -- no liberal talk person, no show, or network can touch him. He OWNS the top spot. I wonder why?

After losing so much market share... are they STILL in business? Has MSNBC climbed it's way out of the toilet tank?
According to the NYT, MSNBC drew only 805,000 viewers on weeknights, while Fox News draws 2,000,000 viewers these same weeknights this year.
Hardball Wins June Demo? Not so Fast…
Multichannel News’ Linda Moss writes about MSNBC making an error in its June ratings calculations for Hardball…
But the announcement immediately drew fire from CNN and Fox News, who charged that MSNBC was using straight 5 p.m. time slot data for June, not data solely for Hardball.
By using the 5 p.m. info, rather than program data, MSNBC was including in its tally special coverage it had aired on Meet the Press moderator Russert’s death and memorial.
Without that special coverage, MSNBC’s numbers drop. Instead, CNN’s Situation Room at 5 p.m. ranked No. 1 in June in the 25-to-54 age group, averaging 186,000 of those watchers, while Fox News’s American’s Election HQ was second with 179,000. MSNBC’s Hardball was third with 171,000.
An MSNBC spokesman conceded that the network had made an error in including the Russert coverage along with that for Hardball at 5 p.m.
“We used time-period data to calculate our ratings, like we always do. However, had we realized that Hardball wouldn’t have finished No. 1 for the month with the special coverage excluded, we wouldn’t have issued the press release as written,” the MSNBC spokesman said. “It was an error on our part.”

I don't know whats scarier. The amount they will be paying him, or the amounts that the company he works for as well as the advertisers are making off of him.
Because you know if hes making that much, they are probably making 5 times that easily off of him, or they wouldn't be giving him that much.
I personally don't listen to him and from what I've heard I probably wouldn't agree with him, but I'm shocked that he hasn't got himself a Sat Radio gig. Maybe they cannot afford him, but he is on totally terrestrial radio, right?
You would think they would be cashing in on him too. Like him or not, hes obviously making the cash and getting the bills paid for the people who carry him. At this price "mediocre" ratings don't cut it.

First, you have to understand that Clear Channel owns 14 of the 18 radio stations in our local market. Gee, I wonder exactly how much diversity in programming we have around here, not to mention "fairness".
Yes, I want to see them bring back the Fairness Doctrine. Limbaugh, Hannity, and all the other propagandists (including Air America) would be gone overnight, and maybe, Clear Channel would have to sell of a lot of their stations to independents, and we'd have a little variety again.

This is precisely the point that us hippies were getting across back in the 60's and 70's. That America has gone astray and turned away from virtue and goodness in order to protect the corrupt Vietnam war and the business interests of a select few.
Incidentally my French hippie/new age girl friend was explaining to me how Britain has been celebrating the excellence of it's health care system. Much like the system in her native country it is excellent and has stood the test of time. I am sure that here in the US we will eventually adopt a national health plan once the corrupt ways of the greed based insurance driven system become intolerable,

Hippies extolling virtue? How Delusional can you be? Let's see... multiple partner, sexually transmitted disease spreading 'free love', illegal drug use and the diseases spread through reused needle use. Moreover, beliefs that their sick, nontraditional actions wouldn't negatively affect family and supposed loved ones boggles anyone with a brain -- perhaps hippies' were already brain-damaged. How much more selfish could they be?

How lame. These are things that have nothing to do with the hippies. If anything the hippies had lower incidences of these things than the general population.
spreading 'free love'
Free love is a concept you wouldn't understand. It's more esoteric and spiritual than flesh oriented and encompasses a sense of caring for yourself, your children, your elders, your world, your environment, and those around you. As I said, something you can't understand.
, illegal drug use and the diseases spread through reused needle use.
Again, another lame attempt to connect a problem that has nothing to do with the hippies to the hippies. Diseases such as hepatitis and now AIDS stemming from shared needle use is generally a problem among heroin addicts living in poorer areas, the majority of whom are/were not hippies. Most hippies generally shunned heroin use.
Moreover, beliefs that their sick, nontraditional actions wouldn't negatively affect family and supposed loved ones boggles anyone with a brain -- perhaps hippies' were already brain-damaged. How much more selfish could they be?
How selfish is caring for people, loving yourself and your family and children, caring for your world and each other a selfish thing ? And beside, the hippies were all for quality and knowledge. That's why so many of them went on to become leading scholars and innovators which they used to make contributions to society and learning. Anything but selfish. Perhaps that is selfish in your cold, narrow, bitter and obsolete world.
Sixty years of poor health care and rotten teeth... that's something to celebrate in merry old England!
What rubbish. 60 years of excellent health care that is oriented around caring for the sick as opposed to making a few CEO's and insurance gamblers filthy rich at the expense of the sick is indeed something for them to celebrate and be proud of.
You're getting very old and quite obsolete and quite predictable as always. I knew my post would get you going. :D

Of course it does. There's not much of a market for Liberal talk radio hosts.
The reason is simple. Unlike Liberals, most Neoconservatives aren't capable of critical thinking. As a result they need to be told what to think and what opinions they should have. Why else would you need to flood the market with conservative talk radio shows. Liberals don't need to listen to on air puppets telling them what they already know, Only neoconservatives need to have their ego constantly stroked, and only Neoconservatives need to be constantly reassured that their opinion is correct.
Without Conservative talk radio most conservatives wouldn't have a clue. I can prove it, this is how dumb most conservatives are. They don't even realize that they have completely butchered the original meaning of the term liberal. Only in the U.S. is the term liberal synonymous with socialism. This is a creation of the neoconservatives. As far as the rest of the world and history is concerned Liberal is and abbreviation for Libertarian which is politically just the opposite of a socialist.
And look who they look up to Rush Limbaugh, Come on this guy is nothing but a doper, a drug addict addicted to hillbilly heroin.
George Carlin said it best when he said the US government doesn't want citizens capable of of critical thinking. What the government needs are sheep willing to be told how and what to think. AKA Conservatives.

Of course it does. There's not much of a market for Liberal talk radio hosts.

Well I beg to disagree on one point.
"Liberals" (let's just call them that, to make things simple) do in fact have a shepherd that they follow. It's not Al Franken or AM talk radio.
Rather, it's the "liberal" blog-o-sphere all over the internet.
So I'd say the reason that "liberal" talk radio isn't successful is because "liberals" go to the internet, not AM talk radio.
I mean seriously - are you going to tell a "liberal" to give up his iPod for an AM radio? Be real now...

So what you are saying is that conservatives listen to the radio while liberals read.
Hmm.. Interesting! ;)

Ah... how many wars have been started by Democratic versus Republican Presidents? Which party's Presidents got us out of those Wars?
You may learn something, IZE. Even this first far-left loon website, noted below, agrees!

More fart noise from the guy who can't handle reality.
Keep on hiding in the wilderness Stevie, the world is too big for such a small man as you.
This may be more then the LIBS can handle.
http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com/2008/07/rush-limbaugh-may-purchase-nfl-team.html
but I'm shocked that he hasn't got himself a Sat Radio gig.
Probably because most of his knuckle dragging worshipers and fanatical followers couldn't figure out how to use one.
The reason the extreme right wing has chosen AM radio as its medium is because the vast majority of its fan base is semi illiterate. It seems as though extreme right wing talk show saved a dying AM radio industry.
Most of the fanatical fans of Rush and Savage whom I have met couldn't figure out a sat radio on their own if their life depended on it. The only way most of them could use a sat radio is if someone else set it up for them. Don't you realize that those types aren't comfortable with all that new fangled technology, Heck most of them can't figure out how to use a computer for anything other then porn.
As far as most rational people are concerned Savage, Limbaugh and the rest are all bottom feeders.
I'll say it again. Until the 'real God-loving' conservatives rise up as one and send the hate-spewing spokespeople for their movement-- Limbaugh, Coulter, Savage, O'Reilly, Hannity, Malkin, etc, etc,-- packing down the road, then they are just as responsible for all the actions of right-wing terrorists in America whom these bottom feeders incite to violence . Just as those in Afghanistan and Iraq who sit idly by while mullahs and holy men preach the same kind of hatred and encourage violence against unbelievers and those who disagree!
Its no wonder that neokon Americans are not very bright. :D
Must suck being a minority. Yes?

Americans with IQ's over 100 have always been a minority.
Like I have said many times before, Personally I'm at the point where I would support a voter registration test that everyone who votes would be required to pass to earn voting rights .
I'm sure the radical right wing extremists as well as the extreme left would never agree to such an idea mainly because such a test would wipe out the voting power of both the extreme left and right. Thus leaving only a rational and educated minority as the only voting force in this country.
We already have the perfect test. Everyone who votes should be required to take and pass the same test Immigrants need to take. The Immigration test would be perfect. If you can't pass the immigration test you have no business deciding who should be president. I know immigrants who understand the U.S. political system better then most natural born Americans, and as far as I'm concerned that makes them far more qualified. Now that's scary.
