In the last few days / weeks I have seen some hints about McCain stepping aside and letting someone a bit more conservative take the nomination. My first thought was that Newt might be the person.
Thoughts?

God Forbid. And McCain is plenty conservative. So is Obama. Your conception of what is and is not conservative is highly skewed as with many libertarian hams it is not reflective of the mainstream concept of liberal and conservative.

Thoughts? That you really need to read something but the fringe media.
On the other hand, you do provide some of the best entertainment value in the political forum.

Clearly this campaign is taking a lot out of McCain and we are still 4 months out from the election and nearly 7 months out from inauguration. I see him campaigning and I just feel sorry for him. I have a feeling he is just up their as a sacrificial lamb in a year the GOP knows it can't win. It's way too late to change.

So, where did you hear this little tidbit? Nothing firm, nothing substantial. Nothing even clearly indicating this. It's just a vibe I've had for the past couple of weeks. When I see and hear McCain speak lately I get a really weird feeling from him like he's holding something back or something. I dunno.

Believe it or not, I think you're right on all counts. The funny thing is, I think he has a real shot in November. How bad would it be for the Democrats if they lost to a sacraficial lamb?

John's just keeping his temper in-check. Head to head, I'm sure John's endurance and energy level would run whimpy and spineless BO into the ground, if they had to campaign together. BO's handlers would have to eventually wake and dress him every morning...

Not in terms of bigger government vs smaller government. Not in terms of lowering or eliminating taxes. Not in terms of reducing government spending. Not in terms of a humble foreign policy.
Bigger versus smaller government is a nonissue. There is no regulation size for government. Government is as big or small as to do the job. Lowering or eliminating taxes ? Thats a factors of economics, not an etched in stone decree. Taxes are a necessity to pay for certain elements that socviety depends upon. For example...
Taxes go towards national defense
Taxes go towards police and fire protection
Taxes go towards health and santitation services
Taxes go towards building and maintaining of roads, infrastructure and transportartion.
Taxes go towards education and other vital services
Over many many years society determined that we as a society of people fare better with these services than without them. Eliminating taxes would eliminate most of these services and in a short amount of time society will determine that these services along with taxes need to be brought back.
Humble foreign policy ? I don;t know exactly what that is.

I can only attest to one half of your assertion. While McCain cannot honestly be termed a "liberal" in the pejorative sense that is bandied about here, there is no question that he is not the kind of rabid reactionary that passes for a "conservative" on this forum. Anyone who would argue that the "neo-conservative" posters who inhabit the undersides of QRZ are representative of any form of modern political thought is either stupid or a comedian.
I don't believe Gingrich would have a chance of winning; in fact, I believe McCain is probably the Republicans best hope given the disastrous record of the Republicans over the past ten or twelve years or so. The public is certainly not as "liberal" as the Left Wing of the Democratic Party is, but I don't believe anyone seriously wants a return to the rampant idiocy that has manifested itself under the guise of "Republicanism" over the last decade.

Newt Grinch? We need another two-timing womanizer in the White House. He could match Bill Clinton, bimbo eruption for bimbo eruption.
When it comes to foreign policy, we have a lot be humble about right now.

McCain has quite the record on this issues. He dumped is first wife when he returned from Vietnam because she was in a serious accident and gained weight. Nice guy huh?
And BTW, he began affair with Cindy while he was still married.

Where did you gain this personal insight into the very personal divorce of John McCain? Court records? In the courtroom for the proceedings? Or are you a close friend of John McCain?

Bigger versus smaller government is a nonissue. Incorrect. It is a very big issue for everyone who voted for Ron Paul.
There is no regulation size for government. Ever hear of the Constitution?
Taxes go towards police and fire
protectionProtection including police and fire could be more efficient if served by private firms instead of the government.
Taxes go towards health and santitation servicesAgain, more effecient if run by private industry.
Taxes go towards building and maintaining of roads, infrastructure and transportartion.Toll roads. This way those who don't use the roads don't have to pay for it.
Taxes go towards educationThe government should NOT be educating our children.
Over many many years society determined that we as a society of people fare better with these services than without them. I agree. But the government is not the best entity to provide these services.
Eliminating taxes would eliminate most of these servicesThat's the idea. This way they'll be choice in the free market.

No, they can go lower. There is revealing McCain has an illegitimate black baby. Sound familiar? That was Bush's tactics against McCain in 2000.

There's nothing in the Constitution about the size of government, Matt; only about the areas in which it might operate.
Protection including police and fire could be more efficient if served by private firms instead of the government.
History has shown that simply not to be true.
Toll roads.
were tried, and in general, turned out to be very poorly run. There's a reason why toll roads were abandoned for the most part in the US.
I know the sky's green in that fantasy world of yours Matt, but in the world where the sky's blue, there are many things for which private enterprise has been tried and found wanting.

New one on me!? Very familiar with Bill Clinton having a child by a black girl in AR. I can only presume it truth since the movie Primary Colors was screened by the Clintons in the White House before it's release and in that movie it is revealed to be truth.
The Clintons were fully aware that much of their popularity was derived from the fact that John Q. Public could feel very honest and upstanding in comparison while they inhabited the White House.
No crooked or immoral act was off limits when the First Family was so well known to engage in the same. ;):)
