View Full Version : youth calling frequencies
I would like to suggest calling frequencies for young hams. It can be a little intimidating to chat with old timers who are not particulary interested in kids being on the air and their ideas and interest do not really help us kids.
What I suggest is calling frequencies where we could cq youth and have a good chance of getting a reply from some one closer to our age.
To Start with lets say frequencies of 3.980, 7.280, 14.280 + - 5khz. We can add bands or change frequencies as required. Of course we can call anytime we are on the air, (and hopefully find other hams who are kids).

Maybe suggest some CW freqs? ;)
I often operate on 14.056 and while I'm not on voice as much anymore, sometimes on 14.176
PS: why is your login n3ik but you're signing your post with kb3qlg/ag? oO

Very nice... I proposed this a year or two ago but it sorta faded off the forums... My opinion... start with one or two bands and make it stick with people! like 20 and 40 meters.... SSB and CW...

Ah ok, well congrats on the upgrade! Good DX to you with your new Voice privs, but I hope to see you in the CW portion too! :D
Time to get your own QRZ account!
On another note: I thought it would be cool to have a new Q code for youth, like how ARRL uses QST to call ARRL members, maybe something line QYT for Calling all Youth or something?

That is a very good idea Tom. I want to see more youngsters getting into cw and will have Lars in FISTS soon. I am old cw op and prefer that to other modes and Lars has embarked on program to learn code.

Do you think it would be worthwhile to get a stray in qst or letter in cq to help push this along? My dad wants me to write to both magazines and try to get them to give the idea publicity.

Lars, I think you could. Some research should be done to avoid calling frequencies that are already in existence (14.058 (FISTS), 14.060(QRP), 14.230(SSTV), 14.070(PSK)). Of course there's the ones on 7MHz too, these are just the few that come to mind right away.

Of Course! We need more youth pushing the papers and getting active in the league! Get something written together... A gameplan, what you propose... bring it to a few adults that can re-read it and make sure it is as professional as possible and give it a go..... The worse that can happen is that they'll say no... which I doubt they will say.
Again my opinion is to start small and work bigger... theres not to much youth out there comparatively, so a few bands at first? This will be neat as well as it will give youth nets something to center around in the future.
I've help other hams in the past get letters our for various proposals and such, I'm willing to give it a read as well.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that there already exists some. Our school club sponsor has some from an ARRL rep. I know one of them on there is 14.270, but, then again, I'm not 100% sure.

I just helped mentor my niece (13) to get her first ticket. Although she is only a Tech she is trying to get her Extra b 4 I do. I told her if she does I'll buy her a new HF radio. Just gave her a used 2m.
We need more youth programs, and incentitaves on here and the radio

I recently set up my first hf station and the local hams went crazy with helping me. I had a guy give me a $220 dollar antenna tuner(mfj-969) for free and another gave me a 25amp power supply. The only thing either of them wanted in turn was that I do the same when I get to be their age and a younger ham needs help getting started!

welcome to amateur radio haha... Its great to have people help like this, although you should NEVER EXPECT this help, its in many cases almost needed in a lot of cases because of the expense of equip. today. I made my first contacts on a $40 kit... but I didn't start rolling until I borrowed a radio from a local club, which I can't be thankful enough!

You're my new best friend! :D
Congrats on getting into CW, may I ask how old you are.
For CW I suggest 14.027 +/- 5khz. (QRQ) and 14.045 +/- 5khz (QRS)

Hi there, this is my first post in the forum.
I'am 17 years old, got my license 3 years ago, live in Sweden.
Don't forget that we in this part of the world aren't allowed to use frequencies above 3.800, and 7.100. 14.280 is fine!

I think this is a good idea. On the calling frequencys we should do QYW(calling youth of the world)
