My 10 year old son is interested in getting into the hobby and I have been trying to find some study material that would be suitable for him. Can anyone on here give me any links? I am a new tech myself, so I don't know if I would be the best teacher.

Ill start off by saying congratulations on becoming a new ham an sparking the interest in your son as well. As for study materials a tech book with the theory is about the best thing I can think of for study materials. Also there are books like "ham radio for dummies" which is translated in to a simplified understanding of ham radio. Which may convey useful to a 10 year old but then again there are many young op's that just use the arrl study book. There is also a book published by the arrl called "getting started with ham radio" this may also prove useful. You can order an AES catalog if you do not already have one, it will have a section that shows many books explaining basic principles of ham radio.
So there are a lot of books you can buy however I dont think there are any that specifically target perspective youth op's. Another route to go would be signing him up for a training course.

Here is a link explaining the basic principles of amateur. radio.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amateur_radio
With this limited amount of information you may be able to brake it down into a simplified explanation.

Although you could just let your son learn as you do.
Let him listen to you and your contacts.
You could teach him basic things like building a dipole and he could learn from there. However if you are both bond and determined to get it done quick I would just get him a tech book and let him go from there.

Hopefully someone on here close to your sons age will know some tips to get him started. Well good luck and I hope you find the specific answer you are looking for. I wish I could be more help, lol. I hope your son gets his ticket so that you can enjoy the hobby together for many years to come.

First off, congratulations and welcome to the hobby. Second, your Son is interested in Amateur Radio, that speaks well of you (he wants to be just like his Father). It might not be a bad idea for you to go through the book (s) and teach him everything about radio. It will have a two-fold effect. You will explain the book to him (the way Dad wants him to operate) and in doing so; the Teacher is a student also. You will pick up things that were missed or overlooked when you studied the material. Your Son will ask questions that will make both of you stop and look up the answers. With the ultimate question being… WHY?????

Best to You and your Son

Thanks for the words of advice, I think I will stop by the library tomorrow and sign out the books again. My son is a book worm, so he can read it and I will be there to help out. :D

Well if hes a book worm I dont think he will have any problems comprehending the tech book.

I'm the president at our local school club and this is a link to the stuff we use. Gordon does a great job explaining stuff and even has recordings of some of his contacts on the CD's. Hope it's helpful.
