Is McCain really any more to the right than King George? It is a scary prospect, I must admit, but why would we suddenly have to worry about the Supreme Court moving right if he were elected?

Did you read the article?
A victory by the presumptive Democratic nominee, Barack Obama, would probably mean preserving the uneasy but roughly balanced status quo, since the justices who are considered most likely to retire are liberal. A win for his Republican counterpart, John McCain, could mean a fundamental shift to a consistently conservative majority ready to take on past court rulings on abortion rights, affirmative action and other issues important to the right.

The likeliest scenario is that Stevens (who is 88) will retire and open up a seat for the next president to nominate. If Obama were to be elected, the seat would be filled by a "liberal" -- no change from present.
If, however, McCain were to be elected, the likelihood would be that he would appoint someone more "conservative" to the seat. That would change slightly the complexion of the Court, moving it perceptibly to the right.
Nothing, however, is certain; remember Bush I nominated Souter under the impression he was appointing a "conservative." Justices don't always follow the play books proposed for them.

Not quite so. Eisenhower appointed California governor Earl Warren to the Court expecting him to be a conservative. He turned out to be one of the greatest Chief Justices of all time, and anything BUT a conservative. Brennan, too, turned far more liberal with time than anyone anticipated when he was appointed by Ike; indeed, like Stevens now, Brennan came to regard any form of capital punishment as unconstitutional under the "cruel and unusual" clause.
It is often a game of blind-man's bluff.

Indeed. One of the things about the US that I used to think would keep us going was that Supreme Court Justices have a tendency to move towards the center as they enter the bench.
Alas, the current president's crop of nominees have dramatically changed that trend, and I feel that may be the greatest harm Dubya has done to the country, as it will have the longest lasting impact.

This "McBush" title given to McCain by the Dumbocrat Party is a 3rd grade psychology strategy meant only for those who don't normally watch the political arena. McCain was opposed to Bush on many issues and voted with the Dumbocrats in the Senate many times.
Even if McCain loses this election, he'll return to the Senate with less of a tendency to "jump the aisle" and vote with Dumbocrats. He might even realize that coauthoring immigration legislation with the likes of Ted Kennedy and then having that same piece of legislation used against himself by the Dumbocrats in this election was a mistake.
On many issues, there is virtually no stated difference between Obama and McCain. Of course with so few votes actually ever cast by Obama in the Senate and never having even coauthored any legislation and his own party being unable to state any accomplishment in his Senate career, you have only his words and campaign literarture to gauge him.

A 'McBush' is what you get when a McKain, who has been roundly abused by the guy who beat him out for President in 2000, publically abases himself by hugging a scraggly bush who has a condescending grin on his face. They meld together into a single homogeneous mass of double talk, falsehoods, half-truths, flip-flops, innuendo, opponent bashing, and opportunism. The bush likes it because it confirms that his tactics crushed the McKain before and now the McKain is forced to publically grovel in the faint hope that the bush's supporters will help elect him President of the United Corporation States this time, before the ol'McKain wilts, withers, turns brown and becomes mulch. A McBush--an old blob with a limited, and short, future.

Supreme Court nominees may be the only reason I end up voting for McCain. I'll hold my nose while doing it and I really believe the conservative movement will be worse off in the long run if he wins. If we can get Steven replaced by anybody to the right of Kennedy, it will be a victory. Even another Kennedy wouldn't be horrible.

There are far too many left wingers here to have any actual discussion Marty. We've got far too many metro dwellers that believe the countryside should be wiped clean and only farmers allowed to grow crops to feed the metro dwellers. We've got far too many posters that go into somesaults when every state doesn't operate in the same fashion as theirs. We've got far too many posters obsessed with legalizing drugs and confiscating all firearms. We've got far too many posters that have lived off the GivMint teat for way too long. We've got far too many posters that are just outright jealous of anyone that has more than they and just can't believe that the world hasn't recognized their superiority and elevated them to on high.

So much bias you betray with that comment.

Haven't encountered them. But do tell, if not farmers, who would you have grow crops?
We've got far too many posters that go into somesaults when every state doesn't operate in the same fashion as theirs.
More than half of those seem to lean right. (They're the ones who tend to get their panties in a twist over whatever CA is up to now.)
We've got far too many posters obsessed with legalizing drugs and confiscating all firearms.
I haven't seen anyone being "obsessed" with legalizing (more) drugs. There are more people obsessed with allowing unbridled abuse of firearms than there are obsessed with confiscating them, although few of either.
We've got far too many posters that have lived off the GivMint teat for way too long.
Again, more than half of whom seem to lean right. (Mostly ex-military and defense contractors.)
We've got far too many posters that are just outright jealous of anyone that has more than they and just can't believe that the world hasn't recognized their superiority and elevated them to on high.
Definitely a larger percentage of those lean to the right.
I've not found either side to have a monopoly on such behavior.

I just see no reason why I can't have BOTH my drugs, and my right to defend myself with deadly force.
After all, rattlesnakes will normally leave you alone as well, the only time they normally bite is if someone makes the effort to fool with them.
Same principal applies here- As long as my conduct is of no impact to others, why should anyone care what i am growing, or what possessions I have?
