Has anyone gotten a good taste of the Icom V8000? How is the receive? I was disapointed with my IC 2100H's front end overload/intermod troubles.
Does the rig scan faster than the 2100?(Memory channels and VFO) Looks like it would double as a good scanner for VHF.

I purchased one about five months ago. Terrific radio, excellent features, great power and performance. The receiver is pretty hot, too. Tough as nails, and is the best 2-meter only rig I've seen. Would be nice if they gave it more modes than FM phone, but oh well. Buy it, you'll like it.

I just got mine several weeks back... My only complaint is that it does not have a 50watt power selection.. it's 75/25/10/5.
I have testing it in my vehicle at 75 watts on a diamond HV7A antenna, as well as a 5/8 wave workman mag mount antenna and it performs outstanding.
Using it in the house on a 12~15 power supply.. I was forced to drop to 25 watts since my supply lacks the needed 15watt continuous duty needed... (thats why I wish I could run 50watt..)
Over all, this is an outstanding rig..

I have owned my IC-V8000 for about 6 months now,I can honestly say it's a terriffic rig, the 75 watts is a little exaggerated mine puts out 72 watts, anyway the receive is awesome, the audio quality from the front firing speaker is clear and loud.....audio feedback that I have had is clear & loud.
I have made contacs 500 miles plus from my QTH..the radio is very easy to program using the supplied HM 133 mike.....i LOVE my V8000, I use it for local ragchewing and IRLP work..awesome!
The only little drawback..when running on high power for extended periods the cooling fan can be a little noisy (minor drawback). I love my V8000...I just wished that Icom made the New IC-2720H alpha numeric.
anyway this was my 2 cents worth.

I just recently got into ham radio. My first radio was the Kenwood TM-G707A. A great little radio. No complaints here about that one. Well I had to buy another radio so I could use it while on the job, and it was a IC V8000. I programmed it and have not had any trouble with it, and all reports from others say its great. Its a great radio and I'll recommend it to any new ham operator as their first radio.

I bought one about three weeks ago to run in only my car and would have to agree with all of the above comments. Quite a wonderful rig with so much power, the front firing speaker is great especially with a soft-top vehicle like mine. Plus its really compact and easy to use. Unbelievable value, I think mine was $179. Buy one!

Was surprised to see this 2002 thread resurrected. Another 2 years and I'll be able to hang an antique license plate on my V-8000.

Watch the s meter. Sometimes a strong signal nearby on another freq will cause the rx to attenuate with only the s meter showing any sign of something going on.

well, the s meter and the rx drops out for a split second every 3-4 seconds. it's very annoying.

Try disconnecting the feed line and using a dummy load or very small antenna (2 foot or less piece of wire) to receive a strong local signal. Is the radio in a mobile? If it continues with the dummy load, and the radio's power supply is clean and trusted the radio is a lemon. Is there some pulsating rf source nearby, electric fence maybe?
Try operating the receive at a different location a mile or better away.
If the radio is new exchange it for another. Call the retail where you bought it.
I have had a V8000 since they came out and it has never done this! I only wish that they would make it a dual bander. Sounds like your radio needs a GOOD Dr..

Hey Brandon, It sounds like you have the priorty watch activated. It scans every five seconds, which will cause the situation you describe. In the manual go to chapter 8, page 42, and you should be able to stop the priority scan. This should take care of it, let me know...Ken
