Japan's Weird War on Waistlines

We've reported in the past on proposals to create "fat taxes" to penalize the selling or eating of politically-incorrect (i.e., high-fat or high-calorie) foods.

But now busybody bodyweight bureaucrats in Japan have gone way, way beyond that.

A new national law requires all citizens between the ages of 40 and 74 to have their waists regularly measured annually. That's over 56 million waistlines, about 44 percent of the population.

According to U.S. News & World Report: "If a man's waist is more than 33.5 inches or a woman's more than 35.5 inches, they are considered at risk and referred for counseling and close monitoring."

By some estimates more than half of Japan's men in this age group are expected to fail the measuring test.

And this law has sharp teeth. Private companies and local governments will be hit with hefty financial penalties if their employees fail to meet the waistband quotas set by Japan's Ministry of Health.

NEC, Japan's largest maker of personal computers, estimates it faces up to $19 million in penalties should its employees fail to measure up. Or measure down. Or whatever.

In response, some companies have created mandatory diet programs, counseling, and weight-loss boot camps for their employees.

As U.S. News & World Report says, these new laws have "given the government and employers ... places at the dinner table in ordinary Japanese homes." How lovely.

How long before Food Nazis in the U.S. glom onto this idea and demand it be implemented in The Land of The Free?

That would pretty much kill it here in the US if they started mandating things like that.

Yeah, thats a heck of a way to get people to get with the program.....Fail at that diet and you're going to have issues :)

Women have a higher percentage of body fat because of estrogen, and because testosterone is at much lower levels than in males, at least males who haven't ran into andropause yet. It is a scientific fact that as males age, they go through the same reduction in hormones that women go through, it's just testosterone, not estrogen. The older Docs didn't worry when lab values were low normal, because they were still "within normal limits". Unfortunately, low normal isn't the same thing as optimal quality of life. Younger Docs are now treating men for low normal testosterone with pure testosterone, and the results have been very positive. Lean body mass increases, percentage of body fat decreases, patients have more energy and strength, but there are other side effects that require real good judgement in deciding to use the drug in the first place. Women that take estrogen for too long, later in life, find increased risk for ovarian cancer and breast cancer. For men it would be increased risk for testicular cancer, and anger problems. This stuff has to be monitored closely.

Why are the Japanese so concerned about obesity when there smoking rates have gone through the roof, as has heart disease, heart attack rates and diabetes? They're gonna have a HARD time in teaching their people to unlearn their acquired Western lifestyles. As far as the sumos are concerned, I have no clue.

Seems that it should be the other way around. Women 33.5 or less and men 35.5.

WOW, then you hang out with some perverted people. :(
There are many scenarios where women are to young.
50y/o and 20y/o should not date, nor should 20y/o and 10y/o!
Think about it it just reprehensible.

I think you are the first guy I've ever heard say that!

Most women that young are more interested in themselves. They haven't quite gotten over the "It's all about me." stage. After some hard knocks, they usually either get real sour or fall off their throne. A woman who's too interested in themselves hasn't got a clue when it comes to making a guy happy. It's all about them. They are really good at spending your money though. I've been told I can pass for 30-35, - won more than a few bar bets like that, but that doesn't mean that I am. I definitely don't have the patience for air heads that I used to. And I have no patience for chicks that haven't got a clue.

Hence, they're too young. Works for me. I took a few hits finding the right person, but she's a keeper. ;)

No... I just grab them and take a bite of raw warm bloody meat out of them. After all, meat should be eaten raw, fresh and right at the natural body temperature of the animal that it comes from. I learned that from a lion that I met once.
