Silent Key/Vanity Call

I have a personal friend and his father was a ham that passed away. Since I am a ham, the family would like for me to have his call sign. I have researched the process, and wondered if anyone had any insights on this. Apparently, since he passed away a year ago, the call is still available but we have supply an obit, then I guess that I request the sign as a vanity call? Thanks for any insights.
