I'm interested in purchasing the new new T90A from Icom; anybody heard good or bad about it yet? I've also looked at the VX-5R from Yaesu, but since I already own some other Icom hardware, would like to keep things uniform.
Thanks,
Telly

As a recently returned ham and a complete neophyte on vhf, I decided to make a handi-talky my first purchase, with the intention of using it as a base station and moblile rig. I was tempted to spend less on a mono-bander, but I figured I might as well spend a bit more and get three bands in one. I read a number of reviews including several on QRZ that were helpful and they were all mostly positive. I have not been disappointed. I have had it only a week and was able to learn to use it relatively easily with the help of the manual. I have not yet learned to use some of the advanced programming features, but I don't need them yet. The audio is good and the rig is light and easy to hold and to carry. My biggest complaint is that it doesn't come with a SMA to BNC adaptor included. When I realized that I would need a mag-mount antenna if I really intended to use it in the car, I discovered that BNC to SO-239 adaptors are relatively easy to come by, but the SMA to BNC is not readily available at my local Radio Shack. Hence, another call to Ham Radio Outlet, where the adaptor is relatively cheap at around $7, but the shipping was another $6: I should have ordered the adaptor with the rig. I am also beginning to realize that holding down the rubber-coated PTT button for any length of time is a strain, so I am probably going to need an external mike. Now I am thinking of getting a headset mike with vox, since this is probably the safest way to go while at the wheel. Thus far, the T90A has met my expectations and I am looking forward to learning how to use it more fully. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I just purchased a T90 and unfortunately, it's going back. I love the feel of the rig and ease of operation, but it has one big problem-it has "biridies" all over the 2 meter band. I had a similar problem with one 2 meter frequency with my Q7A, but this radio has them all over, to the point where it's unusable. I can't squelch them out and in some cases, even turning on the attenuator won't make them go away. I'd like to think that it's just this particular radio, and that maybe swapping it out with the dealer might make a difference. Like I said, it feels good, and is very simple to operate, so I'd love to keep it if I could. Anybody else seen this?

Sorry Henry,
It just might be that one radio. I have had mine now for the past 2 months and I have not experienced any problems of the nature you describe. I am very pleased with the radio and would buy another.
