Here is a story that exemplifies the wasteful and counterproductive way the federal government deals with illegal drug use. Frances Johnson, a 68-year-old grandmother in Washington, D.C. faced eviction simply because her grandson was arrested for possessing a small amount of marijuana. The federal government's public housing system has a "one strike and you're out" policy for any drug law violation -- even if that violation occurs miles away from home.
But no such policy exists regarding convicted child rapists, arsonists, murderers or other violent criminals.

Somebody must like this law, been on the books since 1988?
Sounds like a matter of poor interpretation and lack of any common sense, bureaurocrats have a tendency to do that, often.

One strike law huh?
The "Thought Police" are just around the corner.
I always hear the same bs argument, "She must have done something wrong."

They cannot do that. There's too much money in keeping it illegal.

Because in this country they try to project the image that if you use drugs you are somehow even more evil than a rapist, arsonist or murderer.
These laws are nothing new. They have been on the books for quite some time. A lot of it started when drug prohibition enforcement was intensified under Reagan, Bush, and Clinton. They cam out with idiotic rules like, if you have even a minor drug prohibition you are no longer eligible for a student load or tuition assistance, you can lose your apartment especially if you live in subsidized housing and even laws stating that your property, i.e. car, home, can be seized if ANYONE is caught on the premisis with any type of illegal drug..
Keep it available....keep it illegal.... keep profiting.

Deserted!?!?!? You're behind on the current plan. NO HOUSING PROJECTS! They're all being bulldozed here and houses built in their place. Public Housing is no longer built along the lines of a Housing Project here. The populace of these projects are moved to rental properties all over the area temporarily. Then special low interest mortgages are provided when a home is built or found for them, Housing Projects will soon be a thing of the past. Who did you think it was that defaulted on all those mortgages and brought about the current financial disaster on us!? :(

I forgot, the new plan is to spread the criminals around so they have more people to prey on.

Locally there is much evidence to support that statement, according to the local police/sheriff? :(

Public housing projects, 'eh??
(must . . . keep . . . calm!)
Build a new project, enter occupants, return after one year, project torn to hell.
It dawns on me that these people live in these project PRECISELY because they have no respect for themselves or anyone else and refuse to learn the basic social skills that will allow them to succeed in life at the most simple, basic level.
It is pretty stupid to throw grandma out 'cuz her grandson smoked a joint. Had the poor kid killed his friend, grandma would still have her place. WTF???
(OK . . . here it comes . . . ) ;)
You libs think we're wasting money in Iraq??
Let's cut out the "public housing" crap, make these folks *earn* a living in order to live under a roof and we'll be a WHOLE lot better off! I've driven by many a project with able-bodied folks quite capable of working, just as capable as they have proven themselves at ruining what was given to them.
Darwin at his best . . . . ultimately.

UH-OH, you've offended John Boy now! Maybe you'll get lucky, as I was, and he'll put you on his ignore list! I have enjoyed that status. I wish the mummmy or daddy in Scarsdale would buy him a new keyboard! The multiple spelling and punctuation errors don't speak highly of higher education. :)

No one quarrels with evicting criminals; the injustice is when some sanctimonious bureaucrat evicts non-criminals for the crimes of others.
