From the really, really important and relevant comments on the 'zed lately...
Toll mounts in Mexico's drug war (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-border3-2008jun03,0,4261154.story)
Anyone know anything in-depth about this? There's so many questions to ask about it and, it would seem, few answers. Might even be even fewer people who care that this is happening.

It's just one of those things the Mexican government formally has never admitted in the past, large drug cartels rule in many large portions of Mexico. The politicians and police in these areas do nothing normally, since the largest part of their income is from these drug cartels. Same was true of Colombia for years. The President of Bolivia is a coca grower!

What a waste. All this to prevent someone from getting access to some dried cannabis, some coca plant alkaloids, or some poppy juice. Stuff that anyone who wants it is going top get anyway regardless of all this drug war and interdiction.
Why don't they just legalize the stuff, end the stupid failure of a drug war, and deal with drugs sensibly for a change.
Nah...can't do that. It makes too much sense. beside, theres big money at stake.
Keep it coming...keep it illegal...make a huge profit.

I've heard it said that more people smoke bud than vote. Can't back that up...but it sounds plausible.
