I'm sure some poor person in a third world country is saying the same thing about our SUVs and McMansions.

If you don't like $5/gallon gas, then park the hummer and buy a smart car.

Diamonds are actually quite common and plentiful, even in gem quality, and should have little value. Only a masterful business manipulation plan with the support of many nations has kept diamonds as a valuable commodity. The DeBeers family has been successful in this undertaking for generations now. A zircon is only a zircon because of a purposeful flaw introduced during manufacture, negotiated by the DeBeers family! Mass manufacture of flawless diamonds has been possible for many years now.
