View Full Version : What's a Twenny ?

This new ham asked me "what's yer twenny ? " on the local repeater .
I replied that I would kindly give him two tens for a twenty .
He returned that he was confused and he would be "standing "
I replied that he would be more comfortable sitting .
No reply . :eek::D
I heard some "know it all " type ham police telling him in a not so nice way that "CB jargon " does not belong on ham radio .
I tried humor

Oh the good old "whats ya twenny ?" Did he tell you "ya blowin smoke " or "Ders a bear up the road"? Oh the time wasted on my old cb.
I am a newbie ham of 3 months and like alot of new hams our only radio use was on the cb before 2 meter, thus the CB slang . Its nice when a "elmer" type ham explains the do and don'ts of ham talk but some new hams dont have that kind of help. Give the poor guy a little slack and maybe a helping hand.
Oh and next time be sure to ask if he had that radio peaked and tuned..HI HI!!! :D

One new guy was asking why his FM rig didn't have any" swing " on his meter .
I tried explaining and told him to buy an ARRL handbook .(in a nice way )

Ill admit I laughed at the "swing" comment:D
I never got the ARRL handbook but was given alot of links to info for newbies . I recall Hamuniverse.com (I think) having a easy to understand newbie info section.I also got advice from some hams like "listen , listen , listen!" and talk normal ..no cb slang!

Ask him if hes got his ham license--when he says 'yes', tell him its supposed to be a graduation certificate from the old CB band to the ham airwaves. Then tell him we've got our own jargon--and tell him some of it. Then tell him he should learn that and leave the baby talk where it belongs!! :D

Never got quite that personal with any other kind of critters, though I understand there are parts of the country where that is a little more accepted :)

Yep, me thinks we uns shoold just talk normal, without no special codes or twang. Just be yourself...let the real yoou come out of hiding.
If you use cb style talking, let if flow...if you use q codes, let it go, do not try to be some one you aint.
If you can not spell reel good, just do youre best at trying to say what you are trying to say.....like they say in those commercials " be all you can be " .
Do not let others harass, agitate or attempt to humiliate you into making a message here or on the radio. They are not in your shoes, they are somewhere else out in radio - land. They do not know what youre home life is like, or how clean or nasty it is...we all have problems and I do not want to swap problems with any one else, any more than you do ...that is part of what makes the world go round and round is the variety of situations we are all in....
Some of us have rough child hoods and easy adult life, and others are almost the opposite. But we do the best that we can 24 / 7 .
Try not to put others down, for it aint fair for either of you. Be as nice as you can be in all situations, even on the radio or here on the computer . Let the other dude be the grouchy one and you be the nice one.
more later....I got to go p

:p Some one mentioned 10 meters here on this thread, and it reminds me of what I routinely here on 28.085 AM with the truckers who talk there " locally " ( from as fer away as Nashville, tennessee and Montgomery Alabama to west towards memphis, tennessee to around Atlanta, Gawgia ...those with the good swr s in there antenna systems )
Some pass by the home 20 on highway 33 , usually chip haulers going from around Fayette to the International Paper Mill at Courtland, Al....I can hear them for about a good 5 - 6 miles from the house..sure they can hear each other because they are ( usually ) within sight of each other or maybe a mile apart , but they are not " getting out " as good as they do on channel 19 ---reason is ( you guessed it ) their swr is lousy on 28.085 compared to 27.185 where the cb shop tuned it to ( almost a full megahertz in difference in frequency ) .
Slowly burning the finals out of what ever brand / model of 10 / 11 meter galaxy / ranger / connex / etc radio they are talking on...they may know and dont care ( boss may own the rig ? ), or they may honestly not know...with each time they " spike the mike " they are slowly burning up the finals.
Should I care ?
Should I let them know what I know, or will that open up a can of snakes ?
I think I shall remain quiet...easier on me and I will be minding my own business....not my job to play " radio police " !!

It used to be very common to ask people their handle. That is your first name, or what you go by. "Jim", "Bob", "Frenchy", "Slim", or whatever.
It's strange that many hams aren't aware of this, and think that "handle" is a CB only term.

Ask Glen about the term " handle " .
It was around long before any radio was ever invented . CBers picked it up from hams.
Quite a few "old timers " still use it .

I never used the term handle but it was used by hams for years before 27 MHZ CB came about. I used to hear old timers in the 60s ask someone what their handle was. Since I was a novice at the time name was much easier in CW.
I don't think you need to spank someone for using CB lingo on the ham bands but they should be told nicely that it's not acceptable.

my old cb handle was " Mister know - it - all ", not on the smart - alecky sarcastic level, but on the geniune helpful person level...because I had read and knew a little about most all ( or some ) of the cb equipment... what wires did what on a desk microphone, etc.
Of course there were the select few that showed their intelligence and tried to make a fool out of me and I would just sit quietly and wait for them to get over their little rant ( sometimes took the rest of that particular night ), and finish stuff within the next few days.
Those were good times, but I wouldnt want to return, things just wouldnt be the same, and I doubt if I could adjust down to that level again of the kids with their " echo toys " and " roger beeps ( multiple in some cases ) , and I never did like talking about lthe cb linear amplifiers, even on a third party level.... I just cant understand the willingness to break the rules so fragrantly , with such LITTLE substance after all the work...easier to work on antennas and get out as good as you could than to blast folks off the channel using too much power....
but enough of that talk...
back to what you folks are talking about which is more important than my ol' meandering around... :)

It's a score; as in, "Now, of my three score years and ten/twenty will not come again/and take from seventy springs a score/it only leaves me fifty more..."--A. E. Housman
And to keep the sum in balance, I'll point out that the math in the poem is more accurate than the spelling in the math.

First time I heard the term " handle " was in an old ( 40's ) cowboy movie .
Like I said ....ask Glen K9STH about the term " handle " and he will enlighten you .
It's been around long before any radio was ever invented . I think it is OK to use " handle " on ham . ( but not "first personal " ...that's CB SSB lingo )
As far as using 20 or home 20 ....... that's not good unless you're on CB .
Not to be picking on any paranoid weirdos in here :).
Why don't we just " talk normally " and say the name is " blah blah whatever " . ?

which is why some folks talk smart on the radio ( ssb ) and use fast C W to identify theirselves with.
If you have not heard one before, now that the word is out ( thanks to this one little post ) now the whole world knows the idea and it can become widespread over the airwaves.
say THANK YOU , e p !!
by the way, some of you folks should check on the legality of such a situation....wouldnt want any of you folks breaking any rules and regulations now would we ? :)

I have never been a CBer. However, just as many of us came into ham radio through SWLing, there are some CB folks that realized its limitations and became hams.
But to me, the "ban" on CB lingo on the ham bands is just as silly as a "ban" of Q signals on phone, or on a repeater.
Perhaps "purists" are afraid that they will pick up bad habits from the CBers and start using CB lingo themselves.

As far as CB lingo on any ham frequency....
For me, it simply makes my skin crawl.
I can't help but associate it with incredible dumbing down of a once proud service.
I certainly would be off the mark as far as many of you are concerned.
But, my BASIC question I think is still quite valid.
Why, if you are stepping into another hobby venue, would you even CONSIDER bringing your OLD 'lingo' with you?
It IS 'jargon' or 'lingo' that identifies almost ANY group. It IS the way they quickly establish a bond, an identity, a closeness or commonality, WHY would someone CHOOSE to enter an arena, then purposely DEFY those in it?
Basically, that is pretty much the DEFINITION of an AH for most of us.
I stay off of CB, but IF I were to OPERATE on CB, I certainly would try to respect the customs of those who were regular users. I would NOT try to impose Ham Radio jargon on them, nor think I was 'special' because I was from another service, I would TRY to fit in, be respectful of others, and not make myself obviously stand out from them.

I recall the 70's when CB was ablaze with action. Prior to Smokey & and Bandit it was popular - after which it really took off (at least where I lived). I recall getting my first CB though, a Midland 23 channel. I absolutely loved that radio and I had a great time during the 70's and early 80's playing on CB.
Soon the interest waned, got married and work, life and everything else took over. I had some friends in the early 90's who decided to get licensed and I thought it would be fun so I did too. Turned out to be a great idea and I really loved the radio equipment offered to amateur operators - it was NOTHING like CB ever was.
When I decided to get licensed in 1994 I bought my first radio, a Radio Shack HTX-202 2-meter portable. I bought it prior to taking the test and I listened to the local 2-meter traffic so I could get a better idea of what the "etiquette" was for this new ham radio thing, as I didn't want to say or do the wrong stuff (I knew not to try and throw a bunch of CB lingo in there though). I listened for a month, learned, took the test, passed and was on the air a couple months later (back before the Internet when you had to wait for your license to physically hit your mailbox before operating).
Since then it's been a lot of fun and the equipment is better than ever, although I must admit I use mostly Motorola and Kenwood commercial gear instead of amateur stuff). But I've thoroughly enjoyed amateur radio and I think back to my CB days as a stepping stone to something better. Some of the guys I knew back then stayed in CB, which is completely fine. If that's what you like then I don't see the problem with it. But most moved on to amateur radio and it's been a fun adventure.
I'm thankful to those old CB days but you do have to be careful not to carry that type of operating over to amateur radio (aside from the raw interest in radio operation - that you should keep).

I hear police/road block reports over the repeaters all the time. no CB jargon though...in fact i hear Ham jargon on the CB up here!
This new ham asked me "what's yer twenny ? " on the local repeater .
I replied that I would kindly give him two tens for a twenty .
He returned that he was confused and he would be "standing "
I replied that he would be more comfortable sitting .
No reply . :eek::D
I heard some "know it all " type ham police telling him in a not so nice way that "CB jargon " does not belong on ham radio .
I tried humor
Tell him to 10-21 you. Then set him straight.
Heh!
