It's 10pm ET and I was able to get the Island of HI on 14.226.
There was quite a pileup but, I was lucky enough to be heard.

Question , during the summer and late spring will 20 through 10 be open at night much more than during the fall?

nO SMART REPLIES. LANGUAGE CORRECTION BY ME.

Btw, some *removed by moderator* was tuning up over the station from HI and when asked to stop, the station just kept on tuning up.

Yes, typically 20m will stay open relatively late during the summer. I remember my first summer as a general, I worked Russia at 10pm CDT.

You usually can get some good DX on 20 at night too.

Have fun!

Late at night, when all the domestic stations have moved down to 75, you can often catch DX stations on 20M. Last year the Friday night before Field Day, I worked a ZL4 station on 20M QRP with a G5RV.

I have had the 2m beam pointed towards the NE have not a bloody thing all night. Seems folks are not as interested in 2m ssb as they used to be.

Been seeing a lot of activity on 6m.

Yep Young Duncan, there has been a lot more activity on 20m at night.
I hope it keeps up.

I hope it "opens" as well...

At this latitude, 20 meters has been dead, dead, dead lately...no signals heard anywhere in the band. Haven't been able to keep my schedule with
Spokane very well lately.

I have been busy listening to 3.965 on 80 meters....2 folks comparing their personal medical discrepencies (*sp ) to each other and every one that could copy their stations...I was busy shaving and brushing my teeth and listening to this ruckus on the hf radio. No I dont know thier callsigns or their locations, but it was informative to listen to.

Yep, they are still talking, having FUN with their amateur radios....!! :)...on a Saturday night in Alabama...last day of May, 2008.

Priceless EP wisdom..

:) --- or like with me, I was shaving my face & neck, and afterwards, brusing what teeth I still have left...and listening to 3.965 to a couple of men discussing all their medical problems..If I didnt want to hear them I COULD have turned the volume knob down, or tuned to another frequency...but I found it entertaining to listen and shave at the same time ( you might try it ) .

Tell us more, Robert... Tell us MORE!!! :D :D :D :D

I wkd my first and last VK on 20M SSB late one night in 1969, have not checked the band since then, is it still open ?
The other bands have been more to my liking and not on SSB much any more.
.My best path to ZL/VK/Pacific islands, from MI, has been 10M over the years.

A ZL station was coming into Michigan S9 on SSB at 10:30 last night. He had quite a pileup going and was working mostly Texas and west coast stations.

I saw him on the cluster, but I knew it would be a zoo, so I didn't bother. I had fun playing on 10 meters last night. It was open to the north and north west from FL.

Didin't hear much on 20m this am around 8 am, guess all of our EU friends were having lunch and sipping wine or whatever they like to sip at lunch.

How many of you work 20m eu dx or how many of you in the eu work us dx
from a mobile rig?

If you use a mobile rig do you run it barefoot or do you use an amp as there are base stations that will step on a mobile so they can make the contact?

20 meters has been better than usual lately in my opinion, not sure about the sunspot situation. Not every day though, is equal. I usually do better in the late afternoon through early evening from here in NC. Of course my new 55' (center height) 260' inverted V seems to help as well on the RX. I run about 700 watts, an Icom 718 and Heathkit SB-200. Was able to get some good old (and new DX as well), more than usual lately. Since 5/26 worked (on SSB), France, Barbados, Belgium, Russia, Italy, Northern Ireland, New Zealand, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Chile, England, Cyprus, Poland, Argentina, Algeria, Slovenia, Ukraine, Croatia & Germany, some coming in a good 59 at times. Judging my signal during major pileups, I only rate myself a 5 out of 10 on a scale of getting heard quickly, but sometimes there's the special "window" as well, where the DX station & myself both come in loud and beat the odds. I'm on just about every day now looking to see how conditions are, seems like it's improving, but it's not for me to really judge.

Yesterday evening 6/5/08 while on my way back from work heard a station from Poland on 20m and worked him while in route home. Worked him on 14.202. Not for 100w and a Tarheel Screwdriver Antenna.

I went up the Blue Ridge Parkway and operated portable on Saturday on 20 meters (SSB) with just 100 watts, at over 6000' elevation. It was during the day, from 10AM-7PM. I did not answer any CQ's, just put out my own CQ's. I was not looking for any DX either, just to have fun and see who would come back to me. The band wasn't it real great shape, but the elevation helped. Also it was quite busy with the museum ships weekend, etc. I was able to work 30 states and also Quebec, Ontario, Puerto Rico, and even a station in Colombia came back to me in the evening. Just wanted to do an experiment and it was a lot of fun.

Lots of Russian, and a few Ukraine and Estonia stations on 20m PSK-31 tonight.
Band just went dead about 5 minutes ago. Around 0350z.

Nice to see it working so late in the evening from the East coast.

Saw the cluster info flying by. Couldn't get there, working on something else. That is, until 0355z. D'oh!

Oh well, we'll get em next time. Not bad for the middle of summer with no sunspots.

Talked to a station in Costa Rica last night (Thurs) on 14.190 (where a lot of you can't go) while driving back from work. :D

Folks I must say that I'm really impressed with my Tarheel Screw Driver antenna. It's really a very good antenna and worth the $$$$

Great opening on 20 last night, talked to Belgium,Estonia,Italy and Poland yesterday around 7:30 on 20 SSB using my usual 10 watts and a 45' PAR end fed. The path to Poland was gorgeous,a good 58 received on his end and a pleasant QSO. Needless to say he was pretty impressed when he heard my working conditions.

See if I can bag that Estonian station you mentioned, that would be a new one for me and bump my worked total up to 107.

The other morning I worked India, heard him an honest 59.

So far, about a dozen Russian station and one from Kazakhstan on 20m RTTY.
Too bad I had to shut down because of an impending thunderstorm.

Will try 40 later after the thunderstorm passes. 20 will be dead by then. (probably)

Got Estonia on 20 SSB, he was working split, up 3.
Tons of people calling him where he was transmitting, but only 1 or 2 where he was listening. So it was a pretty easy catch!

Thats number 107 for the log...

I'm hearing ZLs again in NJ tonight on 20m RTTY (ANARTS RTTY contest). It's 2330 local, 0330Z.

I'm hoping to find some VKs on, but haven't had any luck so far.

EDIT: just worked FO (French Polynesia), an new one for me. That's DXCC number 96.

This is why I love ham radio. 100 watts, a hunk of wire, and being in the right place at the right time == FUN!

The bands went to hell in a handbasket today.
Magnetic storm late yesterday and early today trashed things here.
Noise was thru the roof, and not much to be heard.
Ended up with only 146 Q's in the ANARTS contest, and mostly from Friday night/Saturday. Only 31 Q's today. (Sunday)

505,830 points total.

Maybe things will clear up later this evening for some phone Q's.

That's what all the noise was earlier today. Seems OK now, 20m PSK is jumping as usual. I worked a bunch of EU and SA in the ANARTS test between 2300 and 2359, but earlier the bands weren't so good. I did 86 Qs and 90,580 points total with 2 new DXCC entities.

Just fooled around with ANARTS but managed to log 3 new DXCC's including Greece and Grenada. The bands were weird today, really quiet but I had a QSO with a 2E0 who said I was a 59 +10.....and I'm using 10W and a dipole.
