FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has proposed the commission auction off a portion of the 25 megahertz spectrum with a free provision -- meaning that whoever licenses the spectrum must provide internet access to people for free.

See below. This is referring to a 25mhz swath of the 2.1Ghz band

I would duely think that it is the 25Ghz band, not the 25mhz band.

However, if they are thinking of low bandwidth and low speed, highly compressed internet, you could squeeze that into a 1mhz swath. In order for lots of people to use it however, you'd have to restrict speed to dialup-levels which would not be much benefit over today's situation unless you were outside of telephone range. But this is maybe 25ghz?

Anyone have more details on this?

Nevermind. through all the confusion, it is a 25mhz wide swath of bandwidth in the 2.155-2.180Gigahertz spectrum: http://www.intomobile.com/2008/05/24/fcc-mulling-aws-iii-spectrum-auction-25mhz-swath-may-hit-auction-block.html

Still, this is an interesting possibility. It would be like the free dialup services of yesteryear (and still some are available today). However, you wouldn't have to pay for long distance charges.

It probably still wouldn't work at my house.

Must repeat mantra... I love Hughes.net... I love Hughes.net... Rain fade is okay...

Don't knock Hughes.net for rain fade. I had Hughes.net for several years, and the only time I experienced rain fade was when it was storming so bad that I shouldn't have been on the computer in the FIRST PLACE ! ! !

Hughes.net is not perfect, but it isn't all that bad, if you don't have an alternative!

When I had DirecTV, I would almost always lose my signal to rain fade and snow fade. This is despite having the satellite tech come and align the dish several times, using the signal meter, and having a clear view of the sky.

I figured if I got a larger dish it wouldn't fade as much, but the landlord wouldn't let me.

Now that I own a house, we have cable... ironic, aint it?

Actually yes it is. I am now informed, as I never had been before, that Ryan favors the home row of the keyboard. :D

Who doesn't really?

I see a lot of random garbage typed by people (not here!!!) that uses the home row.

Let me try some random typing:asldfkjskjfhzxcvuyzxiuvykwejn, mnxciuvyx n,fsn,d

Hmmm.... Consciously trying to avoid the home row, I didn't do such a good job, eh?

Well, I've been typing for about 24 years now (since I was 5 1/2). Old habits die hard.

As most municipalities and town's have failed in creating a "free internet" business plan for the public and the 700 MHz public/private public safety wide-band data auction didn't bring in the required monies, the FCC is yet deemed to fail again with this proposal.

There is no reasonable business plan that would allow for a company to to provide free internet nationwide unless it was filled with annoying advertising pop-ups that would make it literally unusable.
