View Full Version : Taxpayer's Money Wasted At SS Offices?
A few years ago I had to visit a local Social Security office. I noted they had an armed private security guard.
While I thought this was stupid I was told that this was temporary due to 9/11.
OK, so what's someone going to do, demand a new SS card? I fail to see a valid reason why they need an armed guard.
Today I went into another SS office and I noted that they still have private security guards on duty. Carrying a Ruger .357 Magnum no less.
What do they need armed security for?
What a waste of money!
Security theater my man, security theater.
Also has the bonus of ratcheting up the fear levels, need to keep the peasants afraid or they might start thinking for themselves again.
Can't be having none of that noise!

I'm surprised they don't have such security at the DMV, though I guess the cops got there quick the one time I was in there and a guy went nuts......
OK, I am a retired federal employee myself. Of course where I worked we serviced and repaired the nuclear subs so we had Marines watching things of course. If you wanted action all you had to do is approach an outer perimeter of a refueling area with the wrong type of badge!
But I have done business in many government offices at the federal level and other than court houses (where I can see a need) why would we possibly need one at a SS office?
My wife retired from the Forest Service and few years back and they had no armed guards. But you did have to watch out for the local squirrels!

Tis' the times we live in. I used to work in the same building as our local VA outpatient clinic. They full-time uniformed, VA employed security with another person who monitors a vast array of closed-circuit cameras.
Interesting. I guess vets get excited too when they don't like the treatment they get at some of these facilities.
I have never been to one as a vet myself and would hope to avoid going there if I can.
At least there they are an employee. This guards in the SS offices I have seen are contractors (private security).

Not really, they are there to protect the mean, hateful, arrogant fat@ss rightwingnut caseworkers who think they are well above the local folks who need and apply for services, like the one I had to deal with for my mother while she was still living...
I went on a crusade to get this person removed, I wrote, called everyday to complain about her arrogance, finally I think they shipped her off to Siberia...
I'm thankful that I never have to deal with Social Security, I have a much better retirement and the folks are polite to boot...

Must be a regional thing. All in my family, with the exception of my brother-in-law, have had very good experiences with the SS people. Most business with SS handled by phone only.
The brother-in-law had to request a hearing to get all his benefits and back pay. Took all of 5 minutes for the Administrative Law Judge to rule in his favor. Sometimes I think SS plays hardball on benefits with some people so their fellow beauracrat ALJ's can keep their jobs.

the VA medical center here in SF has its own police force ... i guess they cover the main med center at ft miley as well as the satellite clinics throughout the city. one of the officers looks kinda like chief wiggums.

What, guns in a Federal Office! Oh, the horrors!
Be careful, or like the Post Office it'll mean job openings when the flag is at half-staff.
