Hi there,

What is the Red Room? Redroom.com is a great social network dedicated to connecting authors, readers, and the literary community at large. Hundreds of successful authors—including Khaled Hosseini, Susan Orlean, Salman Rushdie, Amy Tan, Tobias Wolff, Terry McMillan, Alice Hoffman, and James Patterson—have joined this online community. Being able to associate with a famous author. Doesn't that just soak your spats? :)

So I have to ask - you're from the valley, why on Earth did you move up to the Arctic?

I see one of your faves was Isaac Asimov. Of course he and Robert A. Heinlein were friends, not to mention almost neighbors in the Newark, NJ area back when I was a kid.
Asimov spoke at my graduation. I met Heinlein at a Thanksgiving dinner at a fellow ham's home in Newark, in 1970. Fascinating guy. First sci-fi book I ever read, probably in 4th or 5th grade, was The Star Beast.
Now I read mostly non-fiction, except for the newspapers.:p

To get as far away from California as humanly possible. :)

::I think you missed by several thousand miles. Reunion Is., Mauritius and lots of places are much farther from California than any part of Alaska is.:)
Funny part is, after living all over the country and visiting all 50 states, I chose to live in CA because it seemed better to me than anywhere else. Part of that is due to having four kids who I knew would be going to college: CA has more "Top 100 Universities" by world ranking than any other state, and actually more than most states combined, and they're affordable thanks to the state heavily subsidizing them. At least, so far.

>Part of that is due to having four kids who I knew would be going to college: CA has more "Top 100 Universities" by world ranking than any other state, and actually more than most states combined, and they're affordable<
A bit of quick research reveals CA schools occupy 14 slots of the "Top 100 Universities in the United States" ranked by U.S. News;
Also, CA schools occupy 10 slots of the "Top 100 Universities in the World" ranked by ULinks (U.K.);
And 8 slots of the "Top 100 Universities in the World" ranked by SCRIBD (China & U.K.);
and intererstingly enough, CA schools occupy 10 of the Top 50 in the World rankings by Analogik (which ranks by music programs, not engineering)...
In everyone's list, Stanford, Cal Tech, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, UCSD, UCD, UCSB and UCI always rank in the top 30-40 schools in the world. Often, UCSF, UCR, UCSC, Pepperdine, University of San Diego, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State LA, University of the Pacific and others add to the mix.
Excellent reason to be here if you have college bound kids.
Then, a good reason to move out is once they've graduated, it's too expensive to keep living here.:(

...no, the correct term for Alaska is "physically possible".... "humanly possible" would indicate that you had moved to Alabama.

My uncle, David Alan Johnson is a writer of World War Two stuff and trade magazine articles. You've probably never heard of him.
Eric, I'm off to view your page now. Good luck.

"Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
Based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.
"It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand.
His son is working for the Daily Mail,
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.
Paperback writer
"It's a thousand pages, give or take a few,
I'll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.
"If you really like it you can have the rights,
It could make a million for you overnight.
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.
Paperback writer"
