Hi
I am contemplating to get a new radio for mobile use and owing to the car that i own i realy need a tx/rx that has a removable front to mount on the dash and the base unit to be out of sight.
I also have a big intrest in aprs.
My current setup is with the kenwood tm-702 which i use for talking and an adi on 2mts with a gps in the trunk for aprs.
as i understand it the tm-d700 is aprs ready which could i hope see me get rid of the adi and the gps in the trunk.
i could then just have one radio and gps up front.
So how does this radio perform are there any glitchs that i should be aware of.
regards
Bob

I've owned a D-700 for about a year and a half and I love it. It's the best way to do Mobile APRS IMHO. I run it normally (internal APRS) for day to day use with either a Garmin GPS-II+ or Streetpilot.
For special events, I run hook up a laptop and run DOS APRS or APRS+SA for mapping display.
I've seen some complaints form some users on the APRS SIGS, but nothing that mattered to me (i.e. Apparently it isn't optimized for scanning: If I'd wanted a scanner, I'd have bought a scanner!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Also, the TNC is optimized for APRS use, and is limited for standard packet.
I really like the Programmable Memories (PM's) which allow you to program 6 (5 memories + OFF) sets of parameters (TNC settings, APRS settings, default frequencies, display and power settings, etc) so that you can easily switch between setups for different situations (I'm set up for using Internal APRS, TNC mode with external computer, dual voice with no TNC enabled, and a parked mode with minimal beacon rate, display, etc.)
Good luck

Alinco has an APRS-ready mobile that's rather new to the market for about 280.00 or so, the D-700 is still up around 600 dollars. The D700 is the best thing on the market for mobile APRS, and you get x-band repeat to boot. I've never used the memories or scanning features on any radio, but the 700 covers up to the gig freq's (Read the specs for accurate data) I just like the dual-band, remote head, APRS, X-BAND ability, and the fact you can plug your GPS/computer in without a lot of cable-making (Like a KPC-3 HSP or DB-9 cable with the GPS/Radio shared setup)
You can't rin BCON/APRS and Packet at the same time. In order to use your laptop, you have to switch modes. It will still hear the packets and run WINAPRS/UI, but it won't auto-TX GPS data in APRS mode at the same time (Or I'm missing pages in the RTFM session)
If you get the D-700 you will be a happy individual. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I have owned my d700 for a year now and run it in the APRS mode full time. The aprs mode is the best on the market and have not had any problems with it. It has full APRS functions including messaging. Depending on what GPS you use you set it up to plot heard stations directly into the GPS as waypoints. So for what it sounds like you want to use it for, the D700 will be the best radio
