On another forum (french), there's this muslim guy who tries to convince us that god exists and he came with the following argument: When I see a solar eclipse, It seems obvious that god created the universe, how come the moon is the exact diameter so it covers the sun exactly, with that kind of precision... it could not be possible with the big bang.

This statement is so extravagantly stupid that for one of the first time, I didn't know what to answer, I mean, what can you say against that kind of lunacy

Sorry, I had to blow some steam.

I guess he's trying to make another argument for "intelligent design". Unfortunately, he's chosen a fairly poor example of it, since most eclipses aren't total, and the size of the shadow varies.

It has become evident to me as the years pass by that the world is now inhabited with lunatics and most of them find themselves in government jobs.
Britain seems to be overflowing with people who are so gormless and yet profess to be the font of all knowledge, I often wonder what we did wrong that encouraged so many of them. They learn nothing, and forget nothing.
There are even people reading this who speak of balums and diapoles.

Lunacy? I think not. Stupidity perhaps. To bad there is no cure for it.

Obviously, the boy flunked any kind of astronomy class he was ever enrolled in. Since its creation, the moon has been constantly moving away from the earth...slowly, but surely. Millions of years ago it was close enough to totally obscure the sun during a solar transit, with very little exposure of the corona. Millions of years into the future it'll be far enough away to allow a significant portion of the corona - or even the solar disc itself - to be seen during an event.

The moon is NOT moving further away. It is shrinking in size, as the mice are eating the green cheese away. In a few decades it will be all gone, and the mice will be huge.

And by the way, I know this to be fact because God told me so. At least His was one of the little voices in my head. I think he was the loudest one.

This statement is so extravagantly stupid that for one of the first time, I didn't know what to answer, I mean, what can you say against that kind of lunacy?First off, you should have learned early-on that it's pointless to attempt a discussion based on logic with a large subset of our fellow humans. Also note that facts, while interesting and often useful, have little bearing on the activities of both religion and politics--the two realms of human tragedy being nearly identical in that respect. Attempting to have a gentlemanly argument using reason with an adversary relying only on faith is likewise pointless. Try having a rational discussion about faith and its pros and cons with the same audience--do this a second time and shame on you. :)

Your best course of action, second only to nodding your head in complete agreement, would have been to attempt a random walk down insanity, beginning with a question such as, "Yes, it's clear this is true. But, why do you suppose God would take such care to enable our occasional observation of such an insignificant thing, in such a tiny corner of the universe?"

Hopefully, this would lead to the obvious conclusion that God has as his highest purpose the entertainment of Man through clever parlor tricks.

I stand corrected and I thank you for it. I must have had a brain anomoly going there for a bit.
