How difficult is it to change the ion memory battery on my HTX-404?Is it just a removal of the back cover and a change of the battery? Details of how I can change it myself?

Radio Shack has no description for replacement -- or owner's manual on their support web page.
Only reference is part number.

Isn't the HTX-404 basically the same layout as the HTX-202? If so, take a look at the battery replacment writeup by WB3GCK for the HTX-202 at:

I used the procedure on my HTX-202. It was easy and worked great.

Alan, N5NA referred to a nice solution by Craig LaBarge, WB3GCK for battery replacement.

I did find the HT-404 Service Manual (Adobe Acrobat) at Repeater Builders

HT-404 Owner's Manual (Adobe Acrobat)

I just completed this earlier today on a "broken" 202 I got on ebay for $30. After the battery replacement it started having the Er2 issue. A simple re-alignment on the PLL, and it works fine now, although the deviation seems a bit low.

Should work fine on the 404 as well.
