Now that I said it, is it possible to be civil here?
If you like making sport of one another, maybe an insult section? I might enjoy that, if that's the point.
I see "moron", "idiot", "fool", "scumbag" and so forth in this section. Much too often.
I really don't see any dummies here, just smart guys acting like them.
Like I said, I think it's possible to have civil discourse on issues.
If someone likes to flame, let's have a password protected no-holds-barred section where the gloves can come off and let the insults fly.:D

I agree with your thesis, if not the supporting rationale.

So far, I have not found it to be possible.

It's funny that you post this idea, any time that I ever mentioned that a debate does not include personal attacks I was told that I was just too "thin-skinned" (far from it), or "afraid to take a stand" (one that still cracks me up, apparently not being insulting and objective is somehow "wishy-washy", another quote.)
So, I would agree, civil discourse would be great, arguing the issues is enjoyable entertainment to me, and without all the insinuations, labels, personal attacks, generalizations, character assassinations, and straight out insults it would certainly do much more of a service to the information and opinions, but I ain't holdin' my breath pal. Let me know how that works out for ya...

It always amuses me when an insult is directed 'toward' someone, and they take offense, they are considered 'thin skinned' and dismissed.
however,
When someone directs an insult at another party, regardless of the context or intent, the flamed party will usually cry foul and whine to the mods...
I'd like to say this is exclusively a 'zed thing, but it's not...
Either way it's a double standard, and needs to be acknowledged when it occurs...
In any case, the solution is simple... You don't like what's going on, leave, or turn off the box and walk away.. Internet bullies and blowhards are a dime a dozen.

When we see the likes of the guys on cable who do the very same thing, when Presidential Elections come down to the kind of sniping we've seen for as long as a lot of us have been alive...well, I've given up on "civil discourse." I would think that that's the way out of the abyss into which this nation has fallen, but apparantly, whoever it is that controls such things, disagrees and thwarts any attempts at it.
Given that, I consider what happens here to be a microcosm of what's happening nationally. And, believe it or not, I think it's one of the more civil and meaningful discussions. I guess that every political discussion is going to have the aggressive types who will try to bully people into agreeing with them, and the other types that like to be "cute" and make snide remarks about anything because they like to be "cut-ups", and them and the other types are always going to be an igredient of politics. Makes you wonder why anyone would choose to be a professional politician and do this in persion, on a major scale every day.
Sometimes I think that that nation's an airliner in a nose dive, and all the passengers are arguing over 1) If the plane's really in a nose dive and 2) whose fault it is...meanwhile the plane gets closer and closer to crashing.
Sigh.
Oh...I agree with you...just offering how I look at it.

Seems to me some of the animals in the farm are more equal than others around here. More and more evey day
It's way too easy to have a knee-jerk reaction when you percieve that something negative seems to have been thrown your way. Why take yourself so seriously? Why waste such powerful energy on triviality? All you do is reflect the anger back at yourself, and you end up feeling terrible. Have fun. Be friends. Don't sweat it!

Seems to me all the name calling comes from the same side of the political spectrum.
Seems strange to me a guy can live more than half a century, hold a remarkable string of incredible jobs, have the respect of scientists and engineers and military officers, and be decreed stupid here, because he expresses a one sentence post some stranger disagrees with. Guy who calls the other guy stupid makes an evaluation of the stupid guy based on a sentence of a dozen words. Guys who work with the stupid guy make their evaluation based on 13 years of working together. Someone isn't doing it right.
I have to wonder how many people here would say the same things toe to toe with the other guy. Not all hams are 70 and 5'2.
I have to wonder how many people here would talk to another guy like this in front of their boss. I would be fired for the behavior I see here if I did it after work, on my own time.

Disagree but be Civil, Righhhhttttt.
I am on a couple of other political blogs, and the rules are simple attack the message but not the messanger. If you attack the person(this is to include calling them names) you are banned for 30 days the first time, second time it is forever.

Glen Zook, K9STH, a.k.a. "fearless moderator," had what he described his "QRZ Rules of the Road" which where:
-No profanity
-No obscenities
-No personal attacks.
And as far as the name calling is concerned, it doesn't matter which side of the political spectrum it comes from, it's still considered a personal attack and can you get you a "time out" at the very least.
People get too wound up over this stuff. Get over yourselves.
