Stan Gibbs G3TQG Silent Key Eulogy

Stanley John Gibbs was born in Carters Green, West Bromwich on 5th April 1936. He was an only child of doting parents who looked after him well.
He worked for Halfords, West Bromwich, becoming a manager and became interested and obtained his “radio” licence G3TQG. He also developed an interest in Computers and attended a course at Sandwell College. He had an early Sharp computer, and an Einstein computer and from these friendships developed with people in Aldershot, and Scotland which led to ‘phone calls and conversations.

Stan had always been most unusual in as much as he was always happy with his own company and continued to refuse offers of company and meals, even at Christmas. But he still continued his contacts with his friends on air, or through the Computer Clubs and despite his dislike of gardening kept the garden neat and tidy. His health wasn’t too bad until he had shingles, and also a pain that led to him being tested for Bowel cancer which resulted in his first operation.

Until a couple of weeks ago Stan dealt with his Cancer, bravely, positively, with fortitude and, as always, humour. His parents would have been so proud of him and he died on 23rd April still trying not to be a bother to anyone. He will be so missed, for his humour, poems and idiosyncrasies that were Stan, and for which he was much loved.

I have known Stan for many years almost since I was first licensed for CW with G0FPN. We used to have many QSO’s in a group on 80 metres. However, we never met up until more recently after his Mother died. Although he had not been active on Radio I managed to get him interested firstly in Skype so he could chat with friends and then CQ100. This was like a new beginning for him. He loved CQ100 with a passion. I was proud to have helped him back to radio albeit for a short time. I enjoyed our chats and will miss dropping in for a coffee and sorting out his computer problems. 73 Stan.
