Is Sharpton a nut?
NEW YORK — Hundreds of angry people marched through Harlem on Saturday after the Rev. Al Sharpton promised to "close this city down" to protest the acquittals of three police detectives in the 50-shot barrage that killed a groom on his wedding day and wounded two friends.
"We strategically know how to stop the city so people stand still and realize that you do not have the right to shoot down unarmed, innocent civilians," Sharpton told an overflow crowd of several hundred people at his National Action Network office in the historically black Manhattan neighborhood. "This city is going to deal with the blood of Sean Bell."
Sharpton was joined by the family of 23-year-old Sean Bell - a black man - and a friend of Bell who was wounded in the 2006 shooting outside a Queens strip club. Two of the three officers charged were also black.

No, in this case he's not a nut. As much as some of you may hate Sharpton he has a point in this case. This type incident has happened too often and nothing is being done to correct it. People are angry and rightfully so. Who wouldn't be under such circumstances. They know it's just going to happen again and again and one day it might be one of them.

Some people probably would like it if the cops did pull out of Harlem. At least they wouldn't have to worry about being shot.
Unfortunately it ain't gonna happen. Harlem is not just for poor blacks and hispanics anymore. Like most areas of Manhattan the price of Harlem real estate has risen substantially and chunks of Harlem are now yuppieland.

A black man got shot by police. Damn!!
DAILY, black men get shot and killed by other BLACK MEN but you don't see the good Rev'rund gettin' his panties in a wad over that. If you take a moment to look, you will see that Black on Black crime is rampant, but the race baiter himself doesn't give a rat's ass about that, 'cuz it doesn't fit into his race-baiting ways.
Please post the evidence for your claim that "[t]his type incident has happened too often . . . "
What has happened too often are racial responses by Sharpton in his quest to milk racial prejudice out of nothing of the kind.
The police officer who first fired the shots at this man was BLACK!! Did you know that??
If the race baiter Al Sharpton would spend HALF as much time demanding that Blacks stop killing themselves, respect family and mother and father, he would be doing justice to the Black race he pretends to support.
But of course, he doesn't, 'cuz there is no money to be made out of suggesting Blacks stop killing themselves. Telling Blacks that the POLICE are thugs makes him much more money.
Al Sharpton is the worst thing to happen to the Black community in recent years, right up there with the good Rev'run Jackson.
Is Sharpton a nut?

Funny how this deteriorates to a politacal football.
Facts are, one officer shot 31 times at an unarmed man.
That's one mag with a chambered round and a reload, and firing all those rounds.
If you did that to a home invader, you would be jailed pending charges.
Think of it. Imagine pulling a trigger 16 times, reloading, discharging the second mag, never having return fire!

I use a shotgun for home protection, after 31 rounds either there wouldn't be enough of the "home invader" left to 'bag & tag' or I'd need some serious home repairs if I shot as poorly as NYPD detectives.

So what if the police did their job right? Everyone I know said the guy had it coming for selling drugs. Selling drugs should be a death penalty such as in some other countries. This friend of Obama, Sharptom, is nothing but a trouble maker living off the black people's problems. What ever happened to him being investigated for tax evasion? They covered that up fast.

Wrong oh King of England! You must suffer from reading comprehension problems, as usual. There's no "big talk" involved and no "premeditated murder" involved. There will always be plenty of people to sell it regardless of the penalties.I'll take it a step further. Drugs shouldn't even be a crime. Prohibition doesn't work. It'stime we stop wasting taxpayers money on idiotic prohibition

Regardless of however much you may hate Sharpton and Obama, at least Sharpton is the only one who is standing up for the people who are being shot. This is an ongoing problem This was not the first time the police have blown away an unarmed civilian who was committing no crime and it won't be the last. The people want something to be done about this problem and Sharpton is one of the few offering any leadership on that front.

Couple of facts here. Police are not trained to shoot to kill. They are trained to shoot to stop. I am not entirely familiar with this case, but wasn't this where they guy was in a car? That means he was not unarmed. A car can be a deadly weapon. If the driver is attempting to run over an officer or if the officer believes that is what is happening, they did not shoot an unarmed man.
How fast can a cop discharge 16 rounds, reload and fire an additional 15? I've never tried it. I have tried it with a .45 which has a heavier recoil but only holds 8+1. I can get through 2 complete mags, on target in about 7 seconds. The mag change takes longer than anything and even if the guy was slow, it could easily have been 12 to 15 seconds. While firing, the guy was trying to figure out if the threat had stopped.
Once you determine that lethal force is needed, you're pretty much free to continue until you believe the threat doesn't exist. You can't fire a single round after that point, but 1 or 5 or 50 isn't the point. The only point is when the threat has stopped.
I wasn't there. I don't know exactly what went down. I do know that the justice system found everybody "not guilty". If its good enough for OJ, it should be good enough for these cops.

Oh no there Jethro, you are still wrong again!
You are stating you will kill someone in your house regardless of whether they are armed. You are stating by your post that you will reload until you have pumped 31 rounds into them and the remains are unrecognizable.
You just stated intent.
It is enough for a prosecutor to go off on.
You keep pretending I am not from the US, that I didn't just live there or something. Dumb mistake Jethro.
Probably why I can tear you apart so easily.

The whole problem with this issue that is being missed is that it has to do with what an appropriate response is, that is what should be the core issue anyway. People like Al Sharpton who crave the spotlight in the name of racial equality muddy the waters on these kinds of issues simply because they don't have any actual proof. This wasn't necessarily a racial issue. As has been pointed out two of the responding officers were black, unless they're self-loathing black men then I don't see how it's patently racist. Not knowing the officers in question it's impossible to say. Unless there is proof to suspect racism it does a total disservice to the cause of equality to automatically play the race card.
The issue is reasonable force in response to something perceived as a threat. It's rather easy for us to all sit behind our computers and judge a situation that can develop in mere seconds. That being said this particular story is a tough call just based on the amount of shots fired, but if what the officers say is true it's not completely unjustified. This is the officers version:
[Officer] Isnora claimed that after he warned the men to halt, Bell pulled away in his car, bumped him and rammed an unmarked police van that converged on the scene. The detective also said Guzman made a sudden move as if he were reaching for a gun.
[Witnesses for the prosecution who were in the car] Benefield and Guzman testified that there were no orders from the police.
With tires screeching, glass breaking and bullets flying, the officers said they believed they were the ones under fire. Oliver responded by emptying his semiautomatic pistol, reloading, and emptying it again. Isnora fired 11 rounds, and Cooper four. Two other officers who fired weren't charged.
When the smoke had cleared, there was no weapon inside Bell's blood-splattered car.
So, we have two opposite stories, neither of which can be substantiated except for by the participants. (Where are all the dash cams and ten zillion cameras that cities seems to love so much these days?) If someone were driving a car at me in an obvious effort to injure and/or kill I don't know that I wouldn't do the same thing. The same goes for being shot at by overzealous cops, I would be apt to think of them as thugs and reactionaries as well. Again, not being there it's really easy for me to judge.
Here is the real problem with these stories, no one really knows what happened. No one really knows what the motivations were, what the context was, who was truly at fault, etc. It's very easy for people like Al Sharpton to make this a racial issue, without any actual proof, and very easy for others to say it was an overreaction, without any actual proof. I would imagine that is probably the burden carried by many courts, sifting through conflicting stories and finding, beyond a reasonable doubt, that those being tried are guilty or innocent. Was there reasonable doubt with this case?
I don't claim to have the answers. We've seen plenty of cases of overzealous cops lately, but that doesn't mean all cops are that way. We've seen plenty of cases of people being persecuted for their appearance, but that doesn't mean that every person of a certain group involved in a situation like this is being persecuted for their appearance. Who is to say? Seems like a lot of shots, but at the same time in a chaotic situation like that who knows... eeesh.

How can these people like Sharpton, Jackson, King etc. have Reverend or Doctor tacked on their name? I thought a person had to have a certain degreee of intelligence to be called Doctor. I am from the old school and do not believe in having my heritage ruined because of some greasy haired person (reverend?) telling me what I must accept. It is getting so bad that television can no longer be enjoyed because of them.
