If there are any other insomniacs out there what do you do for fun when youv been up for 72 hrs straight. I do some strange things to cure myself of boredom.
For example I have been listening to the same song for 15 hrs. I once even categorized my fish tank rocks (while they were still in the tank) by colour. Now that was something else. I have even made a 2ft pyramid of cigarettes.
So yes I do some strange things when Im fighting sleep deprivation.
What do you do or would you do If you only slept about 3-5 hrs a week.

Easy, go see your doctor & better living thru chemistry. Short of that you can try melatonin. that used to put me under without feeling icky the next day. Just take the stuff at 10pm and try to clear your mind. No stimulants past 2pm for a while too! If the melatonin dont work, try benadryl.

P.S. All the above is ofcourse laymans advice. I would go see the doc.

Try doing something. Do you work? If not, stay busy all day by doing constructive things. A hard days work will make the ZZZs a little easier.

Dave (looking forward to being bored someday)

Take the advice in this article on preventing prostate cancer - it can be used for insomnia as well (article link posted by KWW - credit where credit is due):

I would get on a search engine and find a site that describes the symptoms of bi-polar disease and see how much of it fits you. 72 hours is ridiculous. Do you use recreational drugs other than weed? I'm not accusing you of anything, just asking. Your age is also important. I was a terrible insomniac during most of the 90's because of a severe chronic pain problem, and hindsight tells me that was the first step that eventually lead to a severe depression and two hospitalizations. The human brain and body are amazingly resiliant, but this stuff can kill you in more ways than one. After prowling around on the Internet, if you are still concerned, see your Doc.

Well I have been prescribed many different sleeping pills but they dont put me to sleep. They usually just make me sick or hallucinate. And no I do not do any drugs of any kind as was asked. Iv been this way since about the sixth grade, the doctors told me its because my brain is working all of the time. Its as if I must be thinking about something at all times. And yes I do keep busy, as for work no not at the moment Im a full time student. However In the summers I do work at an automotive plant, twelve hr days six days a week and still not sleep.
Thank you all for your concern however I just posted this thread to see what you all do with your time when you cant sleep. Im not to worried about the insomnia itself as I am used to it. Actually Im not the only insomniac in my family I have quite a few uncles and cousins this way as well. But it only seems to be the males in the family, I wonder if thats genetic?

Any way on a different note I forgot the most important thing I do when I cant sleep and thats talk on the radio.

Thx and 73 de kb3laz

I frequently awake during the night and rarely get back to sleep, so I end up watching movies all night...even Chinese ones where I don't have a clue what they're saying, but I'll watch them, anyway. So, with little-to-no sleep and working two, full-time jobs, it makes for a bleary day.

I've tried a range of meds but either they leave a metallic taste in my mouth the following day or they leave me too goofy to do my work well during the day...which really raises some eyebrows and causes head scratching from the aircraft mechanics after they read my maintenance/repair instructions.

The one I'm currently using is highly addictive and I've built up a tolerance to it, so my doc said I have to slowly cut my dosage down over the next few weeks so I don't risk a heart attack or stroke. Oh, like that's worse than no sleep. :S

Tonight's entertainment: I'm going to turn on both the air conditioner and furnace and watch them fight it out.

Hi All,
Maybe I can help; though, I'm not a Doctor of any kind, nor do I play one on TV. Here is what works for me, your mileage may vary. First, cut out all sweets. The sugar strips vitamins out of your body. I take a multivitamin plus minerals daily. In the evening with supper I take a vitamin "B" supplement, I did find that I didn't need it every day. An hour before Bed Time I take 500 mg of B5, panthenoic acid. (GNC has it) and 3 mg of melatonin. I also take a prescription relaxation tablet, a very small dose. It shuts my brain down a bit. I am usually asleep in an hour to an hour and a half. Before, I was missing lots of sleep. I had tried the prescription stuff e.g. Ambien and the effects just didn't last. Gl HTH

Gotta be careful about the melatonin: I tried it for a while and it actually made things worse--my brain was "on" all night long, but shut down just in time as I arrived at work. :D

From what you describe, you may want to see a Psychiatrist rather than an MD. You may be suffering from Bi-Polar disorder. Lots of info available on the internet and there is an excellent Bi-Polar forum at www.depressionforums.org
