View Full Version : If you could have any callsign in the world

What would you choose?

Standard amateur format - at least one number in between somewhere.

I'd choose RY4N.

K8MHZ
04-23-2008, 01:34 AM
I got mine. K8MHZ

My daughter, Nicole, nicknamed 'Koley' has K0LEY.

Unlucky at love, lucky at call signs. (That does not include my daughter, the love of my life.)

Nope, I wouldn't trade my call for anything else. I have one, if not the best, as anyone else.

My friend Brad seems to agree.....K9MHZ is his call.

VO1Z , S1RW , XM1K , VO1VO ,IC0M , VC1T , CY0XM . several others of course, what is cool is i could have 5 of those callsigns (2 with special permission) while here in Canada.

I enjoy my callsign very much, i will enjoy my additional 2X2 callsign even better when i am able to apply for it in 4 years.

K0HWY

I feel lucky and honored to have this call sign.

It belonged to Tex Beneke, primary tenor saxophonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra between 1938 and 1942. Tex was originally licensed as W2CKD and later received K0HWY after relocating to St. Louis. I have no idea when he was first licensed or when he received the second call sign but I know he held K0HWY as far back as 1981. Anyway, being a part-time big band leader/trombonist and fan of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, I'm glad to have Tex's old call sign.

I like my call. Changing it would be like changing my name.

The only other call I would like would be W1KPS, my dad's old call. It is available. Occasionally I check to see if it has been assigned.

Gh0st would be nice on halloween. Or, 6L6GT during a Bruce Kelley contest.
I have heard both on the air before.

The choice of C02GAS was funny.

Considering i just changed calls, i really don't foresee changing to another anytime soon...

The only exception to that might be if I were finally able to get out of the Carolinas, and back home to ohio....

It was suggested that I apply for W8NCR...

That's awesome!

The day my original call was listed in the ULS, I started browsing vanityhq.com, just to see what was out there. I didn't have anything against KI4UGE, but was only curious. After a few minutes of playing around, I thought, "K4GUN couldn't possibly be available, could it?" I looked and not only was it available, it only became available that day. I got lucky.

The only other one that I thought would be better for a competitive shooter would be AA0M. When shooting a certain type of pistol competition (IPSC), each target is scored by rings. The official examines the target and calls out the number of hits and misses. "Alpha alpha, zero mike" is a perfect score of two hits in the A ring and no misses.

I've had this call all my life but sometimes people confuse it and call me 4Q2PAL, not sure why.:p

If I could have any call, I'd like to have 6UP.

It would remind me how I've "just missed" the right ingredients so many times.

One more thought on calls. If it were not for the confusion that comes with using an out of region call, I'd take KK6S. Its my grandmother's call and while she is not SK, she's not active any more and I could get it. That call has a lot of sentimental value to me, but using it would create all kinds of distraction during a contest. I'm trying to get my dad to get licensed again before she passes away so we can at least keep it in the family.

I actually like my callsign very much but if I had a choice it would be N2DL for my initials. I have researched this call and it is on it's 3rd owner. The original passed away after having it a long time. The next two owners passed away within one year of receiving the callsign so maybe I should stay clear of it.

A friend of mine and my wife have a joke that if my XYL ever got her license that she would try to get one of the variations of this.

yes I have had a few calls over the last 30 years as I upgraded my licence but it only took a few years to get to a full call, so the call I have now which :)I've had since 1992 is the call that I will keep, two letter calls in VK are very hard to get, there was no way of what call you could get , so I was lucky to get my call.

When I passed the exam back in Sweden, I could either get the call next in line, that is, suffix beginning with D. Or, I could choose among a couple obsolete calls. I picked SM5BGK because of it's beautiful CW rhythm, although the ending K sometimes caused confusion.

Moving to the Azores, I thought I would be able to pick my own suffix, but no. Suffixes are assigned by a computer and I draw a blank by getting CU2JT, which is very awkward on CW. By the way, the guy responsible for amateur radio at ANACOM (The Portuguese "FCC") is Mr Mario Estrela and guess what his callsign is ? Right, CU2ME !

I like the whiskey calls.

W2GRD whiskey 2 get really drunk
W4EMS whiskey 4 ending my sobriety
W4MAH whiskey 4 my aching head

One guy in my club was once in a hunting camp. The guns were put away and they were telling tales around the campfire. They raised glasses to various friends, family and causes. The club member had recently lost his father and proposed a toast, "whiskey for my late dad". He paused and thought about that. Upon returning, he applied for and received W4MLD. I like that one.

What callsign was he talking about? If it was a legit FCC issued callsign that someone had, there shouldn't be a problem mentioning it.

Moderators came around you see...

It's strange, the letters WTF are mentioned a gazzilion times in this thread but it's OK, everybody knows what the third letter means and many of us internally textually read "what the ****"
But that's OK, I didn't say it. A three year old would know exactly what it means but hey! I did not say it!

I can write "this was a piece of s***" and it's OK. Many times we say "pissed off" and nobody says a word, it's mentionned in this very same thread and it's ok... why? it's not coming from the same orifice?

I can come on this thread and insult people, have foul language and be irrespectful as long as I don't say "bad words" oooooohh, then' I'll be in trouble!

I think it's hypocrisy, and it's stupid (sorry, had to say it) one should care more about the meaning of a text than about the actual words employed. Banning the "bad words" leaving the very meaning untouched is 3 year old censorship to make one feel good... kind of like sex movies on US TV where you can see everything but the breast and genitals are covered by a "proper" blurr.
Mind you, you can see and hear everything :confused::confused::confused:
Do you lack imagination so much that if I flip you the bird with gloves on you won't get mad? :D:D:D

Oh, for the callsign, I like "B0RED" even if I'm not in China. It fits my mood tonight :D

I got N4CD at random when they first gave out N call signs back in the 70s. A lot better than the three other calls I had - WN2/WB2KQL, WB9ABT, and WB4WVC.

If I had 20/20 hindsight, I might have requested N4CH for 'county hunter', but I was happy to get ANY 1x2 callsign and get away from 2x3 calls full of long phonetics.

I would get the vanity call of K8WVM

Kilo Eight West Virginia Mountaineer

But if I moved back to the Four call region, I would probably keep this call or shorten it down to a 1x3 or or 2x2

Have a vanity call to honor my late Chesapeake: K9UDX (Also have a vanity license plate with MOTCH for the same reason).

I wonder how many other "dog people" have K9 calls to tie into their sport/interests. There is a K9 Search and Rescue Club in (I think) KY with K9SAR.

W4GD

"Tennessee, Alabam. Double-you four, God Damn"

No, just kidding. I passed up the opportunity to get numerous possibilities of new callsigns when they first started the vanity system. I'll just keep my present one. I'm the original holder thereof, ever since 1959. People from decades ago know me by this callsign.

The W- prefix and the 2-letter suffix at one time meant someone with many years of experience as an amateur, or at least someone with a degree of expertise in the radio art. To-day it doesn't mean a thing. Any unlicensed person could walk in off the street, take the diluted Extra class exam, and request W4GD or any similar call if it is available and have a good chance of getting it.

Besides, why would I want to swap my callsign for some dead man's call anyway?

Well, if I could have a second call sign, I'd like to have P5CD, and all the necessary operating permits and permission to be in the country for 30 days a year and allowed to bring in ham tranceivers, amps, antennas and acessories with no hassles.....that is what I'd like to have.....including DXCC desk approval of 'authorized operations from P5 for DXCC purposes'.

Of course, I'd also like to retain my current call.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't forget the generator (the electricity is cut often and without warning.) Even with the permission, I don't think you'd enjoy being there...
Since that really won't fit for you, you could try K0TEX and no one would think you were from Texas. And it would work long after N0OVember.
:D My current call, I am lucky and got a good call, KA5ROW it is about as good as it gets. :D
See my web page at ka5row.com.
Row, row, row your boat anchor........:D:D
My original issue was KE7DLG. The suffix is about as close to my last name as you can get in three letters. I actually wondered if someone at the FCC hadn't seen the name and what calls were coming up and held it an issue or two to make it this way but we all they don't really have time to notice much of anything and the computer wouldn't care anyway.
The only reason I ended up getting the vanity is because I asked the person at the state how they configure amateur radio plates if the call sign is longer than their standard format. They told me if they don't all fit they stack them which I just couldn't see as a good thing. I got the shorter call and when I got the plates found that the longer call would have fit as they do not put the county number on AR plates which was the question I couldn't get answered previously.
I guess to answer the original question, I would have my current call since it is the one I picked out. I would have to look up info on other countries and their formats and then might find one I would like better but for now I am happy.
How about WN4VQY? Oh, wait, I've already had that one! Not very pretty but it had a good swing on CW.
I guess I'd only change if I could get an "N" call with my initials...
N4NSS
The reasoning? If I ever build my dream aircraft, I can register it with that as the tail number. Then my Amateur, car, and aircraft licenses could all be the same.
Had ve6aup in the 1970's. My tx was a fldx400 and it used to clip out the first dot on cw so people though i was ue6 sometimes.
Now have va6aw which is a lot easier to send and has a nice swing to it. Keeping this one for sure.
Back on the air after many years and want to try and work "aw" stns. Have w1aw from years ago. Must be many more out there.
Also remember a guy in a contest back in the 70's. Had my receiver out a the lake and was listening to k2iu on ssb. He was signing kilo 2 itchy underwear.
My mother got a big kick out of that. She though all hams were a bit crazy. That only proved it.
When I moved from Goose Bay, Labrador, to St. John's, Newfoundland, I had to give up my vo2hp callsign. Since I was, at the time, the reserve officer for the Canadian Forces Judge Advocate General, I picked my current call, vo1ja. It also sounds pretty good in cw: dit dit dit dah, dah dah dah, dit dah dah dah dah, dit dah dah dah, dit dah .
Regrettably, my ex-wife said that it really stood for the Voice Of 1 Jack Ass.
I still like the callsign, though, lol.
