A strange thing happened here this evening. I was putting some stuff in the dishwasher. We have some all-glass coffee cups, sort a of a small mug with a pattern cast into the glass. I was putting one of these into the bottom tray of the dishwasher and was quite gently placing it between a drinking glass and a metal pan lid. When the cup touched the other two items there was a very loud POP! and that cup shattered into fragments, none larger than the end of my thumb. It scattered glass fragments all over the kitchen to a distance of six feet or so and all through the dishwasher. The cup was not hot at the time, it had been sitting on the counter for an hour or so. The only explanation I can come up with is that maybe there was some stress that was present in the cup since its manufacture, and the contact with the other items was enough to suddenly release it. I'm wondering if anyone else out there ever experienced such a thing. And we have a few more cups just like trhat one! Makes me wonder....

Ultrasonic Paricitic Oscillations coming from a small leak in the water line amplified by the cavity of the dishwasher's tub and reflected into the mug by the parabolic surface of the pan lid?

:rolleyes:Isn't that the same phenomenon which caused the spontaneous combustion of Michael Jackson's hair while filming an old Pepsi commercial?

Did you put the pieces in your pickup?

Many of these glass containers have stresses in them and it doesn't take much to shatter the whole thing.
Have you ever accidentally chinked the corner of a double glazing panel (just the glass) whilst carrying it and had it craze into a million pieces? When I deliberately tried to break a similar panel to dispose of it in small bags, I placed it flat on an old sheet and threw a 12lb hammer into the middle of it. The hammer bounced off, pretty much what I expected, and I had to start at the corner to acheive the breakage.

This whole thing sounds pornographic so far.

I think it is related to Janet's wardrobe.

As said, tempered glass has built-in stresses, and can shatter into very small pieces when nicked. One of the reasons car windshields are tempered is that the small pieces are less dangerous than the larger shards untempered glass would produce.

Or so I read in the Times---

Just a guess....

Was the cup made in China?

So a cup breaks or explodes as you are putting it in a dishwasher and one of your first thoughts is to post the event here. Do I have this correct?

You certainly have lots of time on your hands or a very poor social life.

What does any of this have to do with chewing rags?

What does any of this have to do with chewing rags?Maybe it was a chewed rag that cleaned the cup. :)

I like your theory, but you overthunk it.

It's Bush's fault.

HAARP

or...

Halliburton

or maybe even...dare I say,

Global Warming?

Or maybe it's a combination of all of the above. Geez, I can't believe you guys didn't figger that one out on your own. Glad to help, thank me later.:D

p.s. Can't wait for a new president to blame all the world's problems on.
