Of all the sad surprises, there`s nothing to compare, with stepping in the darkness on a step that isn`t there. G1VKB.

Try working a structure fire in the middle of the night, and slipping around the side of the pumper to take a couple of steps out in to the ditchline to answer the call of nature and suddenly plummeting 15 feet, straight down, into a creek. It was cold, wet, and very shocking.

As KC9ECI can attest, one of the first things they teach you as a firefighter or EMS person is "DON'T RUN" at the scene of a fire or call.
We had a rookie "surprise" that had gone to get an axe from the pumper and take to a fellow firefighter that needed it. It was night time and as he ran back around the house to the back yard he litterly cloths lined himself. The owner had one of the old times cloths lines and it caught him just below his neck. He wasn't hurt to badly but the kidding from fellow firefighters went on for a while.
That is the great thing about your fellow firefighters if you do something stupid they never let you forget it.

At the very least, they will ride you until someone does something that supercedes your last act of stupidity.

Next time pee on the fire.
