THANKS for the info and the URLs!

Mickey Rooney also uses a BIG HF station in the 1941 MGM movie "Men Of Boys Town". I did a little bit on that movie and a few others that feature ham radio (or something similar) at our 12/26/08 QCWA meeting.

Thank you so much! A few months ago, I had an email exchange with a fellow who runs an Andy Hardy appreciation site, to find out the title of that film. Yep. He had the answer. But I haven't had time to look for it in the local video stores--I don't even know if it's avialable. But it's sure nice to see that clip.

He should have gotten into ham radio instead of getting married and divorced so many times. He would have had one heck of a station and STILL had a lot of money left over, LOL!

Marriage is a wonderful instution that is, if you love living in Instutions   :D

We should not forget the "The Short-Wave Mystery" Book #24 in the series. I found a very nice copy on eBay about three years ago, and read it one sitting.

Remember the Hardy Boys adaptation of "The Tower Treasure" on Mickey Mouse Club?

"... Handed down in a pirates' chest.
The gold that sailed to east from west,
the treasure bright, that brave men fight,
'til none were left to bury the chest.

Now the gold and pieces of eight
All belong to Applegate.
The chest is here, but wait!
Where are those gold dubloons
And pieces of eight,
pieces of eight..."

That's from memory--YMMV. And, I think the the voice that sang it was Thurl Ravenscroft, of Mr. Grinch fame.

To add: I did some checking. Yep. That's the guy. He was GRRRRRRRREAT!!!

When I was a kid growing up in So.Cal, Every Sunday afternoon there was a Sunday Afternoon Movie on TV. Any way I think I have seen every Andy Hardy Movie made, and Every Sherlock Holmes Movie. I don't remember seeing that Andy Hardy Movie.....I guess I will have to look around and see if I can find it.

There's another movie from 1939, "Everybody's Hobby" that depicts Amateur Radio as its major theme. Unfortunately though, "Gone With the Wind" beat it out for the Best Picture Oscar that year (by no stretch of the imagination was it ever a contender), but it'll be good fun to watch ham radio save the world ... Again.

In addition, those of you who got your first tickets in the 50's and before, I'm sure it'll bring back some fond memories of your early days in the hobby when it took two people to carry your transmitter, and for all you young kids out there in Ham Radio Land, it'll give you an idea of what it was like "way back then."

"Everybody's hobby" isn't available on VHS/DVD, but it comes on Turner Classic Movies from time-to-time, so put it on your TiVo Wish List.

I'd like my children to see this: Just to let them know instant communications is not guaranteed: Amateur Radio is: Like the Police and Military a backbone of civilisation even when such is vulnerable!

let us not forget "boystown", 1940.
whitey and pee wee operate the, presumably, bt club station.
i forget the call sign, if any.
the call sign used at the station in his adopted parents' home in m-o-bt is current. i couldn't figure out whether the station was his or the deceased son's. OR the call sign.

i also forget the hardy boys' call signs.
