RADIO OPERATORS COMMEMORATE WORLD AMATEUR RADIO DAY APRIL 18th
ACTIVATING ISLAS DE CABRAS (GOATS ISLAND) IN TOA BAJA PUERTO RICO
A group of Amateur Radio operators will be mounting a station this Friday, April 18 from Isla de Cabras, celebrating World Amateur Radio Day, date in which after it's inaugural meeting in Paris in 1925, the International Amateur Radio Union - IARU was created. It's the entity that foresees the interests of the different amateur radio organizations around the world, and is the holder of an award and an annual international contest. In it's 83 anniversary, this years theme is "Amateur Radio: a Foundation for Technical Knowledge"
Many countries celebrate this day with on-the-air activities and special events. Last year Spain, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Poland activated radio stations to be part of this celebration and giving out special awards for the occasion. For more info go to http://www.iaru.org/worldAmRadioDay.html.
In Puerto Rico there is double reason to operate this day, besides making contacts with other stations locally and around the world, "we will be in Isla de Cabras to qualify it in a program called US Islands which last year included the United States territories an possessions, having Puerto Rico, being an island, other islands around each of them having their own number" - said Alexis Cardona - WP3ZN, one of the participants. The island has the number PUR-012 and at least 25 contacts are needed to qualify it for the program. Up to now only Puerto Rico and Vieques are qualified from a list of 43. To see the list go to http://usislands.org/directory/directory.html#PR
"This is a good opportunity to make field operations in a hobby that deals with communications, because from there, one may get job opportunities in the broadcast radio and TV media" - commented Edgar Garcia - NP4EG, another of the participants.
The callsign used will be KP4DJ and will operate in CW, SSB and possibly digital
modes. QSL info via WP4F - Daniel Ponce (www.qrz.com/callsign/wp4f). We invite all those who want to see an Amateur Radio Station on the air and also learn about the island park facilities and it's history.
