Amateur Station 8ZU and Broadcast Station WRK

May 3 -11 special event station W8H will commemorate Hamilton Ohio's first amateur
and broadcast station (circa1915). This event will use the original transmitter
building and a still standing WRK tower.

One of Doron Brothers Electric receivers, couplers, and other parts made in Hamilton
will be on display. The homeowner will provide tours of the beautiful home (estate)
of the Doron family.

Shuler and Joseph Doron were brothers who, fascinated by "wireless", experimented,
served in the US signal Corps, and built one of the first broadcast stations in the
US. By way of a Marconi patent these two early radio pioneers operated a facility
which built spark keys, couplers, relays, and other related equipment as well as
radio sets.

Please mark your calendar in order to contact this special event on the air.
A certificate will be issued to all who are logged and QSL with a SASE to W8H.
Your contact, participation and support in this project is much appreciated!

I took the liberty of crossposting your item on the NRC and IRCA MW DXers e-mail lists. I hope you get a huge turnout from both MW Listeners as well as hams.

Best wishes,

Hello,

I'm Bob Anello, owner of the Doron home (a large Victorian shingle-style house built 1889 and listed on the Ohio Historic Inventory) where the event will be hosted. We will be posting additional detailed information (directions, parking, exhibits, house tours, etc.) Thursday morning, April 10 and by the weekend (April 12-13) we will have links to a site about historical information of the Dorons.

Since I am not an amateur radio operator I will not be able to answer any "technical" radio-related information about the event such as the planned transmitting frequencies, equipment to be used, or type of antenna array.

Thanks for running it over a week, which should give everyone a chance to say "hi." Marconi and some of the other early experimenters are well known, of course, but it's great to give publicity to other pioneers. We wouldn't have this wonderful hobby if it wasn't for them too.

Hope everyone has a lot of fun in the pile-ups!

Thanks to all who have posted here with comments, suggestions, etc.
Ive learned more tonight about the truly unique quality very early radio sets and related equipment that will be on display at the Doron Estate during this event. It will be first class. Tours of the home will be spectacular as well.
I hope those who are within driving distance of the Cincinnati area will take advantage of this opportunity.

I was in HAMilton last weekend and had no idea of it's radio history. The next time I am up there (later this summer) I will have something to do. Thanks.

Mr. Anello,

I was born (11-25-46) and raised in Hamilton. My Grandfather drowned and was never found in the 1913 flood. I went to St. Mary's School at 6th and High for all 8 elementary years and walked past the Dorona Apartments every day without, of course, knowing all the history that I just read in the 20 pages I've downloaded.
Strangely enough, I am also a ham radio operator (WA8ULW) and got my license in 1967 with the help of the Butler County VHF association that I saw credited in some of the stories on this topic. I now live in Mason, Ohio (37 years since leaving Hamilton) and am retired from a 35 year field service career with IBM.

Another Mason, Oh ham and I intend to try to come by on Thursday 5/8 to see what's happening. In my very early ham experiences I remember seeing a tall tower in a back yard on D Street. What I remember was a tapered or diamond shaped structure. Someone told me it was one of Hamilton's original radio stations.. NOW I finally know some of its history.

My Dad work for Champion in sheet metal maintenance for 37 years. His stepfather and brother and nephew (my cousin) also worked there for long periods of time. My step grandfather knew Mr. Peter Thompson of Champion and was hand selected from the workforce to do a lot of hand detailed custom woodworking for him in his home and on a big boat or bus that I believe he owned. He was a very skilled cabinetmaker. He would be offended if I called him a carpenter!

Sincerely,

Bob Reiff
