Hi!

Now I am using FT897d. I like this device so much...
But it is time to change it. My choice is FT2000 or 756PRO3.
What do you think about? Some people in Russia told me
about bad quality of latest ICOMs. Is that truth?
Thank you.

Serge, RK3TD.

I had both and I kept my Pro3. Y, It is much easyer to use and has much better audio. The only plus for the FT is you can use an exterial display. To get the same quality as the pro you also need to buy extra filters and spend a grand on a display adapter that should cost 100.00, The pro has a long record of sucsess.

I have had the Pro 3 since November 07, it has taken some getting used to after 13 years of the Icom 765 !! It seems to be very versatile and has not had any failures thus far.. More favorable reports are heard than those of the Kenwood TS 2000 in my circle of friends.. Perhaps the Elecrafte K3 would have been the wisest choice ! WF2S / UF7V

I didn't. Yes, it did cost me. But I wanted to find out for myself. I did. I have had the FT2000D, FT950, FT897D. Bought them all new. Sold them all at a loss, but that's the price I paid for convenience. For me, none of them were horrible. As a matter of fact for me, they were not bad at all for the price.

But after using them for some time, I wanted to try something else.

I now have the IC756PROIII, IC7000, IC910H, and the odd little guy out of the FT7800 for mobile use. I'm more pleased with this group of radios than the last. Very pleased.

For sure, you'll find no shortage of opinions pro and con including mine.

But just remember, they are all coming from people who are not you.

Ask yourself what it is you really want in a radio. Then go find the radio.

Good luck.:)

Hi Serge,

I have owned a 756 Pro III for just under 2 years. It has many hours of use on it in all modes, including a lot of high duty cycle digital. It has been completely trouble free for me. I am not sure what issues your friends are referring to, but I am unaware of any chronic issues. Recently, ICOM did change the design of the PA due to discontinuation of the 2SC5125 output devices, but the new mosfet PA appears to be at least as rugged, if not more rugged, than what it replaced.

I had a chance to play with an FT-2000 and found it to be a very capable rig. My experience was limited to about 30 minutes of tuning around and messing with a few of its features, so I have no real opinion about it other than to say that it was pleasant to operate. I must say that as I played with the FT-2000 I definitely missed the spectrum scope that I have become addicted to on the Pro III. Seems like a very expensive add-on to have to purchase the external display unit for the Yaesu.

That's my 2 cents!

If you are so rich to spend a money in vain, do it.
But there are lots of much-much better rigs for that price.
I do not recommmend FT at all.
You could buy TEN-TEC VII with better results!

I have had my Ft2000 about 6 months. Its a keeper great audio and A top notch receiver. Tried the 756 pro3 before I got the 2k and just didn't like it.
Nothing wrong with the radio I just didn't care for it. The ft2000 hears things that I couldn't hear with the 756 on the same antenna so I bought the 2000.
They are both good radios but don't forget the K-3 it is also at the top of the list.

Serge, if you haven't made your mind up yet, know that both radios are very good. For no more difference in price, you won't go wrong with either one. There are plenty of proponents in both owners groups. No radio MFR has a perfect track record of production without error. None of the Yaesu radios I had, had any problems. All worked well, and flawless. Find someone that has the FT2000, and the PROIII and go to their place and operate the radios for yourself. That would be the best thing to do if you can. Perhaps I'm stating the obvious. Best wishes Serge. Take your time. You will find the radio you want that's right for you.:)

I have owned one (Pro III) for 2 years and had been pleased with it until today, The output power dropped to 4 to 10 watts. My antenna's are matched under 1.5-1. The Pro III is very hard to drive to full output without turning the Mic Gain excessively High. (Need a Noise gate, if you do) I can't see how I could have abused it. I loaded it up and returned it for repair, I hope the new design PA is better than mine was.
I do like the Band Scope very much.

I am a recent purchaser of the FT2000....I love the radio!! The radio gets bad reviews due to a menu system that has 149 (currently) menu items. Many of the menu items you will not need to touch....some you will. It has a very "busy" front panel....one that may be more daunting to become accustom to for someone that merely wants a radio to do very basic ham work/rag-chewing. A look on the web is the best place to find where the audio settings have been honed by someone already, even listed for different microphones that are out on the market.

I will say that I have been looking (and delaying any purchase) for about a year now as to upgrading to a higher class rig. I have investigated the OMNI VII extensively and the PROIII. I almost went the way of TEN TEC, but with the more recent reviews of the FT-2000 (Mark 2 Version) I finally made up my mind. One of the bigger points was that I have a good friend with a FT-1000 Field, and after playing with that I could only hope that the FT2K was as good, or better.

The radio took me appx. two evenings to get the lay of the front panel and to read the manual (several times) while becoming accustomed to the features.

I have owned several radios in my time....homebrew as a kid, FT-101EE, TS-440S, TS-570SG, FT-897D, and a TS-480SAT (some I still have). The TS-570 was the mainstay...the TS-480 for backup and field use.

The FT-2000 has so very many different signal enhancers that the receiver is truly pleasing to listen to. The recent April 2, 2009 updates have corrected many issues the first buyers were not too happy about....but with the ease the radio can be updated, there may always be some updates from time-to-time. I do not believe the 756PROIII may be updated in this fashion....the newer 7600 may be....but about $1500 more.

As an avid DXer, the second receiver was a good selling point.

I am still getting to know mine....but very, very pleased so far.

Read the reviews for the Yaesu FT-2000 (PEP-2000 enhanced version). AKA Mark 2
