Any advice?

Study up on reading schematics and components if you haven't already.
There are some formula questions also.

You will be fine and good luck!

Don't count on the questions and answers on the real test being the same as on the Zed practice test. The answer and the distractors or not in the same order or pattern on the real test so you'd best know the material. An old stand-by for a question one had no idea on was "when in doubt-charlie out". When I practiced on the Zed I noted that the most often used position for the correct anser was "D" not "C". I figured on the real test when I hit one I was stumped on I'd just "Delta-out". I was seriously disappointed when I saw the pattern of answers had been scrambled. just passed the test.

Start taking the Zed practice exams and re-read the chapters involving those questions you repeatedly miss. That was all that saved my bacon on the test.

I got my extree license. Started studying the day I got my general. Took me about 1 year to understand all the material in the ARRL Extree license manual.

Now if I can find all those extree channels.

Don't you have to use a golden screwdriver to open up the "extree" channels? :D

Hi Cal,
Study material from several different sources used to help me. If there is an elmer with the resources to get you some observation or hands on experience it will go a long way towards helping your understand the theory involved. GL

This kind of reminds me of a story about the woman who asked a New York Police Officer "How do I get to Carnege Hall"? and the officer answered "Practice"!

The answer to your question is, "Study"!

Good Luck!

Calvin-

At Age 13, the biggest problem you'll have is the math - what are imaginary numbers and what's this +- j0 thing all about. When I was 13, I couldn't even understand half the questions, let alone the answers! Best of luck to you, but you'll understand much of the stuff better after college and lawschoo.! hi hi. But if you can do basic algebra, that will get you a long way.

Congrats for trying and wish you all the best.

Good luck, not that you'll need it. I know you are working hard to pass. Let us know, OK?

Cal will be OK with the math.

He's a smart kid and can figure it out.

I took my Extra when I was 12 (about 1 year ago), and I was able to figure the math out enough to be able to answer the questions correctly.

However, don't worry so much about what you can't learn. Circle the formulas you know, highlight what you know you can learn, and underline the rest. Focus more on what is highlighted, then move on to what is underlined.

Just my 2 cents

Another thing that is quite helpful is really focus hard on definitions. If you understand those well, you've got a handle on a quite a bit of the material.

The thing I had the most problem with taking the test was the current voltage and phase questions. It took me a while to understand how to get the correct answer - it's a graph type of solution but presented in words so learn how to visualize the graph from the description and you should be good to go.

I read the material much more than I studied the question pool, which explains why it took me 3 tries to pass my Extra.

At first I was having a hard time doing the phase angle questions too. But someone helped me understand it and now I can do those problems in my head without even writing out the chart on paper. I can just visualize it in my head and do it.

Cal just needs to remember xL (X of L) will always be above the resistance line. and xC (X of C) will always be below the resistance line.

Like this question here...

What is the phase angle between the voltage across and the current through a series R-L-C circuit if XC is 25 ohms, R is 100 ohms, and XL is 100 ohms?
A. 36.9 degrees with the voltage leading the current
B. 53.1 degrees with the voltage lagging the current
C. 36.9 degrees with the voltage lagging the current
D. 53.1 degrees with the voltage leading the current

XL = 100 ohms
|
|
|
|
|
|
------------------ R= 100 ohms
|
|
XC = 25 ohms

You draw a new line ABOVE the resistance line 1/3 of 100. because 25 goes into 100 4 times. So draw a new line just above the resistance line...

like so:

XL = 100 ohms
|
|
|
|------------------
|
|
[------------------ R= 100 ohms
|
|
XC = 25 ohms

Then draw an angled line (kind of hard to do in here) but from the point of where the resistance line is, up to the very right corner of the new line you just drew. You'll see that the VOLTAGE IS LEADING, and the angle isn't wide enough to be 53.1 degrees, so therefore the correct answer would be:

A. 36.9 degrees with the voltage leading the current.

Cal, you'll get it... If you can work a scientific calculator, just learn how to do the math. knowing when to use division and multiplication, and using the square root, and the pi keys will be the main ones you'll use. If you're not into electronics you'll need to study on circuit layout, what each of the components do in a circuit, and you'll need to identify a circuit's function just by looking at the diagram. Learn what the difference is between AND NAND OR NOR and NOT gates. Just read the book, all of your answers are there. Keep practicing on QRZ, and when you start consistently passing with 85% or better you'll be ready! And if you have a question on something you run across and don't quite understand it, just ask on here.. Someone should be able to help you understand it.

the EXTRA test is by far the easiest test there is...even easier than the Technician .

No need for study.

Hey I only missed 3 questions.

and if you flunk it, fork over another $14 and try it again.

You can do it, I have confidence in yoour abilities to pass this simple test.

I took the practice exams to see which areas I needed to concentrate on.If you know the rules cold, that section should cost you no points.Comically, the rules were one thing I had to study!The band plan changes, ect.The theory stuff was easy for me, and I was surprised at the paucity of schematics.When I took my test, I had seen exactly 3 of the questions before.Of course they were easy ones I knew cold!!!I am certain you will succeed.Study a lot and gauge your progress by taking a few practice exams and you cannot go wrong!

Dont rush answering the questions, take the easy one first and leave the hard ones to the end, this give you extra time to work them out.

I wish you a good luck my friend

It's like going to Carnigie hall, practice and be prepared.
The hardest part of my Extra exam experience was sending 20 WPM in front of the FCC Examiner with thier straight key.
Passed the first time !
Good luck !

Study, Study, and Study some more. If you have questions ask. You're a smart kid. You'll do fine. I read the book twice and then went back and studied. I did good on the test.
