View Full Version : 1:1 bulon how to make it in simple terms

I had to open one of the bulons I have and found simply a coax cable made in 3 turns, of gray color and there 3 beads on the 3 turns and then some sort of brass thin sheet covering the beads, connected with coax connectors from both side of the plastic made container.

Is this all it’s needed to build a bulon and if it is been home made will it work?

Or is it preferable to just do 21 meter of coax turns of the same cable drawn from the antenna?

Thank you and 73

I buy ferite rods on hamfests, put 3 or 4 together forming an bigger rodand wind 10 turns coax round the bundeled ferite rods.

You can also use an toroid, like an 4c65 type and wind 8 windings through the torroid if you use the 1.5 inch type.

Or use the roll up coax wich is an bit less widebanded, but still works, only thing is it weights more as an ferrite made balun.

On my OCF i use an 1:6 balun and that is followed by an 1:1 balun, ant that works fine with 1 kW choosing the right cores and wire.

Hello.

A BalUn is actually a very simple device, a BALanced to UNbalanced transformer, thus the name.
The ferrite is used to control the RF on the shield of the coax.
The ARRL antenna handbook, as well as the handbook, cover this.
The RSGB manual also covers this.
The Saudi Arabian radio operators guide for military, all in Arabic, is excellent for this also.

It seems in the last six months there are people who are very confused about baluns, and they can't even spell the word correctly. Years ago most amateurs didn't even consider them neccessary, I wonder why there's this recent interest ? "Buluns" and "tunners" seem to be appearing everywhere, and "diapoles", oh and "verticles" !

Proposed new question for Amateur Extra Class License:

A simple balanced to unbalanced transformer is commonly known as

a. balloon

b. balum

c. balun

d. bollock

I have a lurking fear that "b" might be the most frequent answer because that is so commonly seen on the zed. Bulan would be at least explainable, as anyone in the dog=god set knows. Bulon is a new one, and likely to replace balum in the near future.

Thank you my friend, I know what I am talking about but I am not English as you have mentioned here, Antenna balun is the right word, I am sorry for my poor English and thank you for your understanding, thanks also to the others who did not appreciate the sort of difficulties I might have to get every single word translated in English, or some times in Urdu, Japanese, Persian, Thai, or when I am receiving Morse Codes,at a time where my Language is Arabic, I pay more of hard work here than those English speaking people where the English is their Mother tongue and some times I keep wondering how much of Arabic they can Speek ,comparing it to my English here, well, that makes me Extra specail amoung them:)) , any way, I hope there is no hard feelings related to this matter and I will always try to improve myself.

I did search for the word Balun but what I have listed below is what I got in the dictionary, there was not word related to it English wise and this dictionary is not Arabic but from MSN.

balloon
baling
blain
blunt
baleen
bale
balloons
begun
billon

I hope I do not get banned here on qrz.com at a time where I try to explain myself in a civilized manner, as I do love this place and no where else will do me any good.

Again my friend thank you, you did a great job explaining my problem and again thanks to every one else.

Is it Buluns or balun? , I couldn't even get this word in the dictionary either, gettting very confused, 2 sort of English here, like color and colour:)))))

I bit they spell it different within UK, English, Scottish, Irish and people from Wales, strange, isn’t it, looking at the English traffic signs in Wales, no wonder why I couldn’t find my target “ Balun” in the dictionary, or wasn’t that written in English, or is it because most of the English words are imported words from different nations?

My English weakness comes from the place I been studying English in, that was Edinburgh, Scotland, yes the people there are very nice and so friendly, I never missed home while being there, they even made some one like me cut down on my expenses in buying dresses, as they taught me that good habit of having no under wares.

I wouldn’t need to ask you which part of England do you come from OM, you are doing a great job, but again, I know very well that you do come from the North Of Watford.

I hope with my poor English I did come to the point which would make us both understand each other, wishing you all of the best OM, please enjoy posting, as I do here, have a nice time Dxing, that's what's we all up to, being Hams.

Thank you OM and 73

You could always confuse the issue by tossing in an unun

Oh, my friend if your balun is as large as Zeppelin Hindenburg, then you have got your self the smallest and most handy balun, and the only one of its kind.

I always Zeppelin Hindenburg, and now I like your balun:))

The spelling in your post was close enough, and it was clear to us what you were talking about. It was also obvious that you knew what you were asking about, too. The replies posted very early in the thread seemed to cover the topic, and I hope that they answered your question. I apologize if my own posting made you uncomfortable; that was not my intent.

You may have already noticed that threads here will sometimes take on a life of their own once the original question has been answered. That is what happened in this case. There is no way you could know in advance that your posting would awaken a topic that has prompted some grins in the past. That old topic triggered my own post (a suggested new question for the US amateur license exams). I included some of the creative spellings I've noticed over the past few years.

You posted a question later in the thread about not being able to find the word "balun" in the dictionary. Some day that word may find its way into dictionaries, but it could be a long time. The word actually started life as a technical term, BALUN, contracted from the phrase BALanced to UNbalanced (which KA5PIU referred to in his reply). Over the years, the capitalization has mostly disappeared in casual technical writing, but not completely. Use of the word balun seems to be remain generally within technical circles. Lack of widespread use is probably the reason it is not yet in the dictionary.

For many years, I worked in European countries where most of the people spoke English much better than I spoke their language. Seldom did anyone laugh at my efforts to speak their language. On the other hand, we often had some laughs together when I accidentally said something with a funny or embarrassing meaning. My friends let me know it was OK to make mistakes and urged me to keep trying. It should always be that way among friends.

Rashed, your postings over the past few weeks have included some intelligent and interesting questions. Your choice of words and sentence construction gets the job done. The effort you make to take part in discussions here is worthy of respect . . . and I believe that others share that opinion. I also believe that we will all learn some things from your postings, and I urge you to keep asking questions and joining discussions here. 73

Than you my friend.

I do believe that I do not live in this world all alone to regulate it the way it Satisfy my personnel desire, my aspire is to learn from others, there will always be some who knows more and can express his knowledge better than me.

I never looked at any one being trying to hurt me here, never experinced that on qrz.com with its nice people, and from my side, I will always and for ever maintain my respect to all of the members.

Since I joined this site till now, I am learning new things every day.

There will always be differences in opinion and thoughts, even for 2 brothers in one house, will live such conditions, but at the end of the day, those brothers, do love and respect each other, that how I look at my friends here.

I was not unhappy at all, how could I ?, with people like you around, the world is so nice and pleasant.

Thank you again my friend and I wish you all of the best and so I wish all of my friends on qrz.com.
