The Mystery of Global Warming's Missing Heat

Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren't quite understanding what their robots are telling them.

This is puzzling in part because here on the surface of the Earth, the years since 2003 have been some of the hottest on record. But Josh Willis at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the oceans are what really matter when it comes to global warming.

I think it is because Barak Obama is such a cool candidate, the Earth had to start cooling. Obama started his national and world exposure about 4 years ago and that definitely coincides with the report saying that it started 4 years ago.

Dang your right that must explain it :D

There is a lot of informed scientific opinion on this subject, on both sides of the issue. We are looking at some huge cycles here, and these kinds of things build momentum slowly. My understanding is that Global Warming could result in a return to an Ice Age. Whether it is a "Little Ice Age', or a full-blown Ice Age is the question. On the other hand, with polar ice receeding at ridiculous rates and ocean levels rising, the jury is still out as far as exactly what will happen. I worry more about the disruption of the ocean's conveyor belt that keeps the water temperature mixed and moving all over the world. Homostasis is a delicate balance with many variables. With all the pollution, etc. it may be just a matter of the Earth rebooting. Sounds sorta scary for us, doesn't it?

Well, if the ocean leavels rise up enough I'd be worried about how we're gonna move everything from the south, east and west coasts to the midwest. Real estate values and population levels are gonna be going way up in the middle states.

I'll make a killing when I subdivide my 40 acres!!

However, the problem with this theory is: that will the oceans rise???

Put ice in glass, and fill it with water. When the ice melts, does the glass run over? No, it doesn't. Because the water displaced by the ice = water content of the ice. The theory of ice melt supposes that all of the ice is above the level of the oceans. 'Taint so.

I don't expect much of a rise at all.

Guess it matters what your definition of "above the level of the oceans" is.

I know this is a phony photo, but it gets the point across.

I think the idea is that enough land based ice melts we could see a significant rise. Perhaps not significant enough where sharks and fish will be swimming through the windows of submerged homes and buildings but to the point where coastal flodding would be much more significans and severe enough to make life extremely difficult or impossible in some coastal regions.

Nonetheless, if you have inland real estate you may see a significant in the value of your property assets .. :D

There is a tremendous amount of ice and snow on land in Antarctica and Greenland where the ice is a couple MILES thick and that is what scientists are talking about. The Canadian high Arctic is seeing less and less frozen ocen every year for the last several years. The shipping passages are opening earlier and closing over later each year. There are some islands in the Pacific that are predicted to disappear under the water in less than 30 years at the current rate of rising water.

all the just released icebergs are keeping it from warming up?

probably dropping billions of tons of ice in the ocean to mask the temperature rise. By the time they are caught, it may be too late.
WE ARE DOOMED!!!

This is great news. We can finally get rid of some of those annoying DXpeditions to these barely above the ocean islands.
