U.S. government has resumed wiretapping (http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN2229053420080224) with the help of telecommunications companies. The companies are said to have "understandable misgivings" over the unresolved issue of retroactive immunity (http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/01/24/1720200&tid=158) for their participation in past wiretapping. Spy agencies have claimed that the expiration of the old legislation has caused them to miss important information (http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSN2229053420080222?sp=true). The bill that would grant the immunity passed in the Senate (http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/12/1856240&tid=158), but not in the House (http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/15/049215&tid=158).

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out in the end...Well it'll continue until the next President takes over, and then it'll continue even more. Oh - and the telcos will be granted retroactive immunity.

Spying on the Amerrican people without warrant or cause is par for the course for the corporate candidates. Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich and even Ralph Nader would make a difference.

Some local group is running ads on local stations here encouraging people to contact people in the House and "DEMAND" that they pass the legislation that the Senate did.
I believe what they say is "instead of passing this important legislation, they went on vacation."
I'm sure they will eventually pass it, but there are some people out there that sure as heck want that ability back NOW....
People with money to buy airtime during the morning news at least.

Maybe the telcos?

I'll have to pay attention to the end of the ad. Its some group like "Patriots for Defense" or something like that, I thought. Maybe Americans for good defense or something. It was early this morning when I saw it again, but they have been running it at the 5:25am commercial break on Ch 10 since Friday.
It could very well be the RIAA wanting to see what you're downloading too, since, in most cases, a lot of internet stuff routes over the very same wires :)

Pretty sad. What else can I say? I was amazed this was ever tolerated in this first place. I don't know anyone that doesn't want to root out terrorists but trampling over the rights of the very system that we're supposed to be protecting (and spreading) seems like an extremist reaction and a step in the wrong direction.
Man I have mixed emotions on this. If judges are authorizing these taps (even if they are highly classified) and this inforamtion allows them to catch and prevent attacks this is a right call and also legal because the due process rules were applied.
Brett -- I can also see how this can be easily abused, which scares the daylights out of me.
Unfortunately Joe Q Public does not have visibility to how this actually works -- so our comfort level is not there.
And face it, it would have been much easier to trust our Government to do the right thing if perhaps .................. well plenty of examples of Gov SNAFU's (so many screw ups, so little time)
Cheers

Man I have mixed emotions on this. If judges are authorizing these taps (even if they are highly classified) They haven't. That's the whole point.
FISA is a court of judges designed to specifically deal with this (even though they are really a rubber stamp). But the Bush Admin feels that even the classified highly secret FISA court is too much accountability  That's why they sidestepped them and went straight to the Telcos who can be held liable at this point in time for their actions. That is unless Congress passes this bill.
Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich and even Ralph Nader would make a difference.
That... brings.... tears.... to my eyes.
Always happens when I laugh too hard.

Well, I'll put it this way. Kuchinich, Paul, and Nader have spoken in the interests of the American people to a far greater extent than any of the corporate sponsored candidates like Hillary, Obama, and McCain.

No surprise here. This man had zero respect for his country or its constitution. Fortunately, his reign of terror is almost over.

I have yet to hear a valid reason why the administration can't follow the FISA as written. I guess that following the law and observing the Constitution is just too big a burden. The administration claims they are protecting the American people from terrorists. But who is protecting the American people from them?
ACLU and other hate America types get slapped on their stupid "domestic" spying rhetoric.

XR drags out the same old tired line. If you believe in the law and the Constitution and disagree the GWB, you hate America. Sorry that you don't understand what true love of country and patriotism really involves. And it is not swallowing a fear mongering tactic hook, line and sinker. To paraphrase a saying-waving the flag and claiming patriotism is the first refuge of scoundrels.
