Hello.
I decided to, again, ask about the VX-7000.
I was rewarded with a few files, including photographs.
The radio in question is the one used by the Japanese Defense Forces.
A gentleman from Japan let me view the E-Tech manual for the thing.
First off, The VX-7000 is Very much alike to the VX-7R, but a full conversion would be an issue.
The VX-7 shares a lot of code with the VX-7000, but the VX-7 does not have the memory to hold the entire code.
This is not that big a deal, as on the VX-7 is the place for the memory chip, and an even larger capacity chip is now available.
OK, so, what does the VX-7000 do?
25 to 550 MHz, no gaps, AM and FM.
An E, or Extended model, takes it to 999 mHz.
Several flavors of frequency hopping, including SINCGARS and Havequick.
Several flavors of trunking, including LTR, all flavors of Moto, EDACs, and some British thing, to name a few.
With the module, digital, including P-25, D-Star (voice only) compliant mode, and, again, some other modes.
The VX-7000 has an added filter section.
One is for anything above about 45 MHz, for 25 to 40 MHz.
A diode in the correct place will allow the VX-7R do 25 to 40 MHz, but without the needed filtering.
This is for the second harmonic of 25 to 40 MHz.
I was doing it wrong all this time.
Digital is done with an add-on board, just like the barometer for the VX-7.
The added board, more memory, and some better quality parts, seems to be the major change.
To upgrade a VX-7000 to a an E model means replacement of the RF board.
There is no accepted conversion of the VX-7 to the VX-7000, but it can easily be done, all the boards are the same, and all the parts can easily be ordered.
Except for the fill device and a few other odds and ends, and a complete VX-7000 or its boards, everything can be bought from Vertex Japan.
This is, however, a controlled crypto' device in the US.
It is kind of like the PLGR, without it secret codeload, it is not that big a deal.
